Book description

Coming from a remote area of Judah, and from a farming background, Amos was called to a prophetic ministry to the nation of Israel. His prophetic message was a blend of mercy and judgment, as he challenged an erring nation to seek the Lord. In addition to strong condemnation of errant Israel, Amos also held out the promise of restored fortunes, and particularly of the continuing place and significance of the Davidic family.

Allan Harman’s commentary is a careful exposition of the text. While using the ESV translation, he gives particular attention to the Hebrew, discussing words that are most significant for the translation and interpretation of this eighth-century BC covenantal messenger. He also includes sections of application, that preachers will find particularly helpful.

The author has spent a lifetime in teaching the Old Testament, and brings his skills to another biblical book. This commentary complements his other commentaries on Exodus, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Isaiah, Joel, and Daniel, all of which have been aimed at making plain the significance of the text, without unnecessary reference to other writers.

Book Description

What can we expect from life in a fallen world? How are we to live as redeemed people in such a world?

In 22 concise chapters, Benjamin Shaw shows that the answers to these questions are to be found in the message of the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes. Whereas some commentators have viewed the book of Ecclesiastes as an alien intrusion into the Old Testament, and have deemed it of little use for the New Testament believer, Benjamin Shaw does not hold to this misguided view.

In this commentary, designed to be used by non-specialists, he shows that this divinely inspired book is far from being the muddled collection of disparate voices it is sometimes presented to be. He demonstrates that in reality, Ecclesiastes is an integral part of the word of God, and conveys a very distinct message to all who are willing to listen to its wisdom.

Drawing on his expertise as a Hebrew scholar, Dr Shaw opens up the text in a fresh way, shedding light on what, for many Christians, may have a long been a mysterious and enigmatic portion of Scripture.

Book Description

Throughout the centuries, the Letter of James has proved to be an excellent refresher course in what it means to live the Christian life. It is only a few pages long. It can be read out loud in twenty minutes. It is very direct and extremely practical. Several themes run through the Letter of James and make clear what his burden is. He writes about suffering and joy, riches and poverty, faith and works, the tongue and speech, and about wisdom and folly. In a word, he writes about the heart and life of the Christian believer. James’s bête noire is false and hollow piety; pious platitudes are anathema to him. Faith that does not issue in good works, a holy life, concern for the needy, and a disciplined use of the tongue, is for James no faith at all. As with other volumes in the Let’s Study series, the value of Let’s Study James is enhanced by the Group Study Guide which follows.

‘William S. Plumer’s Commentary on the Psalms is my constant companion as I read and preach through the Psalms. His “Devotional Thoughts” at the end of his exposition of each of the psalms are so rich, wise, pastoral, specific and suggestive, that every preacher will find superabundant help, especially in the area of application, in them. I cannot recommend Plumer too highly.’– LIGON DUNCAN

Book Description

Although more than six hundred commentators have written on the Psalms, it has long been difficult to find a comprehensive treatment of this book of Scripture in one volume. Some expositions have excelled in scholarship, but, unlike the Psalter, in instructing the mind they have failed to exercise the heart. Dr Plumer’s Commentary avoids this defect, the author believing that from the Psalms ‘piety has derived more nourishment than from any other source,’ and that his work should serve that same purpose. In 1211 pages he gives both exposition and doctrinal and practical remarks and presents in readable form a great wealth of material drawn from all the leading commentators who had gone before him. In the opinion of Dr John Macleod of Edinburgh, he succeeded in producing the best single volume on this book of Scripture.

Graduating from Princeton Seminary in 1826, Plumer was a well-known Southern Presbyterian preacher and writer who spent the last thirteen years of his life as a Professor at Columbia Theological Seminary, South Carolina. He produced his exposition of the Psalms during the prime of life, and, as he tells us, ‘never felt more disposed to any work.’ In the opinion of others, Dr Plumer was outstanding as a spiritual Christian: ‘His prayers,’ wrote Moses D. Hoge, ‘were the tender pleadings of a soul in communion with God.’ Of the place which the Psalms had in his own experience he writes: ‘During a Christian and ministerial life, neither short, uneventful, nor free from dark days and sharp sorrows, the author has never been able to secure to himself, or administer to others, full support and abounding consolation without a resort to the Psalms.’

REVIEWS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT COMMENTARY

There are three features of the New Testament Commentary which call for special mention:

(1) Dr Hendriksen’s ability to anticipate, propound and answer the kind of questions likely to occur to the thoughtful reader. This he accomplishes, without pandering to idle curiosity and conjecture.

(2) His gift of applying the apostolic teaching and its lessons to present day circumstances in the church and in the world.

(3) His use of simple and happy illustrations, suggestions and contrasts.

These are merits which at once serve to facilitate the reading of the Commentary and greatly enhance its value. – FRASER MACDONALD

One mark of a good commentator is that he does not shirk the difficult passages. Judged by this standard Hendriksen gets high marks. – H.M. CARSON, The English Churchman

The biblical commentaries of William Hendriksen look like becoming classics even during their author’s lifetime … The New Testament Commentary is admirably clear, both in analysis and exegesis. While dealing realistically with interpretative problems when they arise, its primary interest lies in the positive elucidation of the text. Dr Hendriksen succeeds in satisfying the demands both of the biblical student and the preacher in search of homiletical material – a combination all too rare today. – A. SKEVINGTON WOOD, The Life of Faith

BOOK DESCRIPTION

When William Hendriksen died in 1982 he had established a reputation as an outstanding biblical commentator. His New Testament Commentary had become undoubtedly the foremost conservative and reformed commentary of the twentieth century. A master linguist, a painstaking scholar, an erudite theologian with wide experience in pastoral ministry and seminary teaching, Dr Hendriksen possessed those talents essential for undertaking a work such as this.

Each commentary is so arranged that it serves the needs and answers the questions of the advanced scholar, while at the same time satisfying the demands of the pastor and the layman. There are several distinctive features which may be noted. A thorough introduction deals with the date, authorship and background of the biblical book, as well as suggesting reasons for its study. An outline of the whole book shows its organic structure. Moreover, each section is preceded by the author’s own translation of the Greek text, which reproduces the true flavour of the original in idiomatic, modern English. After the commentary, which deals with the scriptural text on a verse-by-verse basis, a synthesis brings into focus and summarizes the central ideas. Points of grammar essential to a clear interpretation, and other specialised problems are dealt with separately to ensure full and adequate treatment without impeding the free flow of the commentary.

The commentary on Philippians which first appeared in the USA in 1962 and was published in 1963 in the Trust’s Geneva Series of Commentaries is now joined in this one volume edition by the commentaries on Colossians and Philemon, published in 1964 in the USA and then in 1971 in the United Kingdom.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

It is not surprising that Galatians, the most controversial and explosive of Paul’s letters, was Luther’s favourite book of the Bible – ‘my own epistle to which I have plighted my troth.’ But it was Ephesians to which John Calvin reputedly turned for his choice as the book which meant most to him.

Certainly, together, these letters plumb the depths of the gospel and soar to the heights of the grace of God which it reveals. Galatians anchors Christian living in justification by grace; Ephesians teaches the significance of union with Christ and its practical implications. The study of these two books and the appreciation of their message is calculated to encourage true knowledge of God and obedient Christian living.

For these reasons William Hendriksen’s masterly commentaries on these two epistles are here combined in one volume. All the characteristic marks of his work are present: a thorough introduction to each epistle; a comprehensive outline showing the structure of Paul’s thought; a careful translation of the text which brings out the flavour of the original. Dr Hendriksen’s commentaries are scholarly, yet are written with a warmth and lucidity which comes from his pastoral concern to introduce Bible readers, students, and scholars of all kinds to the truth which Scripture unfolds.

The combination in one volume of the commentaries on Galatians and Ephesians provides the reader with a valuable resource-book for a lifetime of Bible study.

Book Description

Like the Apostle Paul, William Hendriksen (1900-82) did not write merely as an academic specialist, but for the blessing of the Christian church at large. Nowhere is this more evident than in his treatment of the Epistle to the Romans. At the very letter in which many commentators become most technical and abstruse, Hendriksen’s work is marked by clarity, vigour and a strong sense of the spirit as well as the content of Romans.

In this one-volume edition, the profound theology of chapters 1 to 11 is linked with the searching practical application of chapters 12 to 16. This double volume bears witness to the author’s own claim:

A heart-warming book is Romans. It is filled with instruction touching both life and doctrine. It imparts comfort in life and, as every faithful pastor knows, and ever so many other people have testified, also in the hour of death.

For myself I have to say that it is the most satisfying commentary that I have ever read on this Gospel. Dr Hendriksen is acknowledged and recognised as an outstanding New Testament scholar who is thoroughly up-to-date and fully aware of all modern movements of thought. He leaves nothing to be desired in that respect, but at the same time his outlook and teaching are thoroughly Reformed, conservative and evangelical.

There is an excellent Introduction, and a peculiarly interesting feature is the way in which he gives a synopsis of the argument of each section. At the same time there is a verse by verse commentary, and all bathed in the warm devotional spirit of a pastor’s heart.

Here is an invaluable aid for all preachers, Sunday School workers and Bible Class leaders, and indeed for all who ‘desire the sincere milk of the word that they may grow thereby.’ All who enter into the riches of this great Gospel under the guidance of Dr Hendriksen will find their minds informed, their faith quickened and strengthened and established, and their hearts moved to adoration. At any rate that has been my experience. That is what one is entitled to ask and to expect of any commentary, but alas, it is a desideratum that is but rarely satisfied by modern commentaries.

– MARTYN LLOYD-JONES in the foreword to the first British edition of this outstanding commentary.

Book Description

Dr Hendriksen’s success as a commentator has been rendered noteworthy by his refusal to accept the prevailing assumption that the best commentaries are written primarily for specialists and for academics. His justification lies in his understanding of the intention of Scripture itself. Thus in his Introduction to Luke he writes:

This Gospel is a book of Doctrine showing us what to believe . . . a book of Ethics telling us how to live . . . a book of Comfort teaching us why to rejoice … a book of Prophecy informing us what to expect.

It is because the New Testament Commentary stays so close to Scripture in aim and content that its popularity and usefulness will outlive the present age. No 20th-century author has done more to restore the belief that commentaries should be a part of the common reading of the church. Hendriksen, writes The Baptist Standard, is ‘a penman for all people,’ and many would share the conviction of Edwin Palmer (Executive Secretary of the New International Version of the Bible), ‘I know of no finer commentaries in the English language.’

This volume – which was the last of the series on the four Gospels to be produced – has various new features which probably express the writer’s final decisions on the best arrangement for a commentary, notably:

  • A more basic and lengthy discussion of critical theories.
  • The treatment of Greek words, phrases, and constructions has been separated from the main text.
  • A special introduction to Luke’s central section (9:51-18:14), because this part of the book has given rise to doubts and problems.
  • ‘Practical lessons’ at the close of indicated sections.
  • Two special studies on locating and interpreting parables.
  • A Subject Index for the synoptic Gospels.

Book Description

Mark’s Gospel, ‘written between AD 40 and 65, with the balance of evidence now favouring the earlier part of this period,’ has its own distinct importance, and, in introducing this Gospel, Hendriksen deals in turn with what he considers to be its three main characteristics, compactness, vividness and orderliness. It is ‘definitely the action Gospel,’ and ‘in ever so many passages or paragraphs Mark presents lively little touches that are not found elsewhere.’

Hendriksen does not accept that Mark is chiefly concerned to supply a record of events; rather the Gospel has a doctrinal and thoroughly practical aim – to bring about transformation and furnish an incentive for living to the glory of God. ‘This Gospel was intended to reach the entire Greek speaking world: its message was, is and is going to be meaningful for everybody’; at the same time, he accepts the tradition of the Gospel’s origin in the needs of the church at Rome and points out the relevance of its emphasis in that context:

The manner in which Mark pictures the Christ, namely, as an active, energetic, swiftly-moving, warring, conquering King, a Victor over the destructive forces of nature, over disease, demons and even death, would be of interest especially to Romans, people who, in their lust for exercise of power, had conquered the world. To them Mark pictures a King who excels any earthly conqueror. His Kingdom is far more extensive, his armour far more effective, and his rule far more enduring than anything originating here below.

This volume of the New Testament Commentary fully maintains the high standard associated with the author. While technicalities are kept out of the text itself, genuine problems receive due attention.

Writing on the assumption that a commentator’s business is to expound the Scripture with lucidity and simplicity, it is no small part of the value of these volumes that they set aside a whole spectrum of opinion which has no permanent value for the church. Above all, the author aims, in the spirit of the New Testament itself, to direct attention to one who is both Saviour of sinners and ‘Lord of all’.

I know of no finer commentaries in the English language — EDWIN PALMER

Book Description

The first Gospel, written by one of the least conspicuous of the twelve apostles, is a book of primary importance. Dr Hendriksen’s massive commentary soon reveals why this is so, and why, for the author, the reading of Matthew ‘at one sitting is a thrilling experience. The book is simply irresistible.’

While holding that the purpose of Matthew’s Gospel was ‘fully to win the Jews to Christ,’ Dr Hendriksen does not find the Gospel’s most distinctive feature in Christ’s kingship. Rather it is seen in the prophetic emphasis, in the plan of God’s grace revealed in the Messianic predictions of the Hebrew Scriptures (forty of which Matthew uses), and now shown to be realized in history.

More than this, the Gospel holds forth Christ himself as the Chief Prophet (Matt. 17:5). So among the first three Gospels it is to Matthew that one must turn for Christ’s great discourses. ‘Whatever parallels the other Gospels contain, it is the former publican who has given us this material in its fullest and most organized form.’ Matthew gives us not only the Sermon on the Mount, but the seven ‘kingdom’ parables, the rules for church discipline, the seven woes denounced upon Pharisees and scribes, and Christ’s vivid and detailed prophecy of the future of Jerusalem, the church and the world. The majestic portrayal of the final judgment provides the grand climax of Christ’s prophetic ministry.

The commentary on the text is preceded by one hundred pages of Introduction in which Dr Hendriksen deals with the ‘synoptic problem.’ Dating the Gospel at around A.D. 63-66, he shows the ineffectualness of the attempted liberal ‘reconstruction’ of the Gospel history.

‘Mark Johnston’s Let’s Study Colossians and Philemon is packed tight with informed insight, clear and concise summaries of otherwise complex issues, and relevant and wide-ranging application. Designed to aid Bible Study, this book should prove a first choice resource. All who follow the author’s fast-flowing argument and analysis will find their heads cleared, their affections engaged and their hearts strengthened. I cannot commend it too highly. Essential reading.’– DEREK W. H. THOMAS

‘I am very pleased to commend Mark Johnston’s study of Colossians and Philemon. It admirably meets the goal of this series to provide sound exposition with application based on high quality scholarship for readers who are not technically trained in biblical studies. A decided plus are the carefully prepared study guides that provide a valuable resource for both individual and group study.’– RICHARD B. GAFFIN JR.

‘Mark Johnston walks us through the mountain peaks and deep valleys of Paul’s teachings like a friendly tour guide, drawing from much study but speaking on a level we can understand. However he leads us on no mere aimless, spiritual tourism, but guides us on the only path to escape the wrath of God and enter the fullness of His grace. Paul’s epistle to the Colossians boldly declares the centrality, supremacy, and sufficiency of Christ for every step of this journey. The epistle to Philemon shows us how knowing Christ transforms relationships. The message of both epistles is sorely needed, for the church of Christ constantly faces temptations to shift its attention from Christ to man-made religion and spirituality, with a resulting loss of practical love.’– JOEL BEEKE

Book Description

All too often Christians and churches are shaped by the latest ideas about Christianity instead of the timeless truths of the Bible which form its true foundation. Although what has become known as the ‘Colossian problem’ was tied to a particular place and time, the issues bound up with it have surfaced again and again throughout the ages – thus what was happening in Colossae in 60 A.D. has a lot to say to us in the twenty-first century.

Paul’s little letter to Philemon is intimately connected to Colossians, and is one of those often-overlooked gems of the Bible. The respective messages of these two letters are closely related, and some of what Paul had broadly set out to the Colossians is developed in detail in his letter to Philemon, who was a member of that church.

Let’s Study Colossians and Philemon will help readers to see the horizons of both letters as extending to the church of all ages. Paul shows us that the acid test of the spiritual health of a church is whether or not Christ is at its heart – not just in some vague and general sense, but Christ in all his glory as he is set before us in God’s Word.

‘On the whole, if I must have only one commentary, and had read Matthew Henry, as I have, I do not know but what I should choose Poole.’– C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

There are some good reasons why Matthew Poole’s work was the only 17th century commentary on the whole bible to remain in extensive use until it became unobtainable in recent years.

Poole’s uncommon gift of compactness and comprehensiveness enabled him to distil into his work material that was generally spread over many folio volumes. When the exhaustiveness of Puritan literature later became a cause of disfavour, Poole’s commentary was exempt from the criticism and even in the 19th century Richard Cecil could say ‘If we must have commentators, as we certainly must, Poole is incomparable, and, I had almost said, abundant of himself.’ His supreme concern is to clarify the meaning of the text. Consequently where the meaning is plain he spends little time, but on difficult passages he is fullest and frequently gives a survey of various views with reasons for his own conviction. In this way he brings out the importance and relevance of obscure passages-particularly in the Old Testament.

Poole is clear and easy to follow. Each chapter is preceded by an outline of the contents and principal teaching. But behind his commentary there lies the massive scholarship that went into his famous Latin Synopsis. His commentary draws largely on the riches of that work but presents it in a form which makes it serviceable to a much wider circle of readers. It has been said, ‘You meet with no ostentation of learning in Matthew Poole’s commentary and that for the simple reason that he was so profoundly learned as to be able to give results without a display of his intellectual crockery.’

C.H. Spurgeon advised his students that Poole’s volumes ‘are necessities for your library’, and gave this testimony of his own experience of their worth. ‘On the whole, if I must have only one commentary, and had read Matthew Henry, as I have, I do not know but what I should choose Poole.’

Today the Commentary will be found helpful for general Christian reading, for regular reference in the Christian home, for Bible classes and for ministers and students.

Book Description

The post I Wish Someone Would Explain Hebrews to Me appeared first on Banner of Truth UK.

Book Description

Every Christian needs to understand Hebrews. If they do not, they will misunderstand the Old Testament and will also fail to fully appreciate what the Lord Jesus Christ has done, what he is doing now, and what he is going to do in the future. As a result, they will remain spiritually stunted.

Over the years, plenty of books have been written to explain Hebrews, but only a few of them have had ordinary Christians in mind. Some of them are so large and so complicated that they appear to be the last word. Experts enjoy books like these, but everybody else is left bewildered.

This book does not pretend to be ‘the last word’ but perhaps, for some, it will prove useful as ‘the first word’. Stuart Olyott explains Hebrews as clearly as the subject matter allows, keeping in mind the advice of Albert Einstein that ‘things should be as simple as possible, but no simpler’. Crystal clear explanation of the text is followed by detailed practical application. Indeed this book contains many applications, some of which are very direct.

Throughout, the aim of the author is to focus our gaze upon Christ so that we might follow him with renewed courage.

Book Description

A practical guide to a key New Testament book, in which the Apostle Paul teaches how the gospel must shape the believer’s life-style and relationships both in the church and the community. A welcome help to those facing unrelenting pressure from a godless environment and sin’s continuing deceitfulness.

Corinth was a confident, modern and self-assured city, proud of its image and thoroughly pagan. It was a miracle of God’s grace that the seed of the gospel had taken strong root in such potentially hostile soil. But the young and tender plant was in grave danger of being choked by the suffocating pressures of a godless environment, and the deceitfulness of sin still at work in the hearts of believers.

In the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, he teaches his readers how the gospel, in which they have believed, must now shape their life-style, within the church and the community. What does it mean to be ‘spiritual’ in a truly Christian sense? Where do God’s power and wisdom lie and how are they to be experienced? What is the relationship of knowledge to behaviour, of truth to love, and of love to life?

Additionally, the letter deals with a host of other practical issues from immorality and lawsuits in the church, to the significance of the Lord’s Supper, the use of spiritual gifts and the evidences for the resurrection of the body. Always intensely practical, this letter provides both rich teaching and an accessible model of how, as 21st century Christians, we should understand and deal with very similar problems and issues which still divide Christians today. Let’s Study 1 Corinthians provides a practical guide to the understanding and application of one of the key texts of the New Testament.

‘The whole unfolding Let’s Study series is a must for every Christian home that is
serious about getting to know the Word.’ — COVENANTER WITNESS

Book Description

Peter’s great themes of grace and salvation in Christ, godly living, and comfort in suffering, echo down the ages to the present day. William Harrell’s fresh and lively treatment of 1 Peter shows that these themes are as relevant to the church today as they were in the first century. We, too, need to hear of the greatness of the salvation accomplished by Christ and to heed the call to consecrated and orderly living, to endurance in suffering, and to vigilant service.

As with the earlier volumes in this series, the value of the exposition is enhanced by the Group Study Guide which follows.

‘The whole unfolding Let’s Study series is a must for every Christian home that is serious about getting to know the Word.’ — COVENANTER WITNESS

Book Description

A first-century Christian, contemplating the future of the church on earth, might well have asked: How will the church fare when the apostles are no longer present to teach and guide her in person? How can sound doctrine, on which salvation depends, be preserved? And how can good order be maintained without the apostles to put it into effect? Part of the divine answer to these questions was the apostle Paul’s first letter to Timothy. Paul wrote to instruct Timothy on the conduct of his ministry in Ephesus. But in the purpose of God his instructions were to remain permanently valid for the church and its ministers till the end of time.

In this concise Bible study, John Cook guides the reader through Paul’s letter, pointing out its relevance to twenty-first-century Christians and churches. He shows that behind all the detailed guidance Paul passes on to Timothy and to us lie his amazement and gratitude that ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’ (1 Tim. 1:15), and his fervent desire that the church Christ came to save should remain ‘a pillar and buttress of truth’ (1 Tim. 3:15) until the appearing of the Saviour in glory.

The Let’s Study series seeks to combine explanation and application. The aim is exposition of Scripture written in the language of a friend, seated alongside you with an open Bible.

Book Description

‘Given the relationship between Paul and the Thessalonian Christians, it should not surprise us that his letters to them throb with tenderness and care…here, as perhaps nowhere else in his letters, we see how the apostle loved his converts and laboured to lead them on in the faith. This should make every serious Christian, and especially every responsible Christian leader, turn with eagerness to the text of the letters that await us.’ — From the Introduction by Andrew Young

‘The whole unfolding Let’s Study series is a must for every Christian home that is
serious about getting to know the Word.’ — COVENANTER WITNESS

Book Description

When Paul arrived, Corinth was prospering as ‘the fourth largest city in the roman empire, a commercial bridge between East and West.  It had two harbours – one on the Aegean and the other on the Adriatic Sea. Situated at such an important cross-roads of the ancient world, it became notorious for its sexual vice and immorality. the description of Gentile sin in Romans 1:18-32 fits Corinth exactly.’

Paul preached the gospel there in the early 50’s, stayed for eighteen months, and established a church there.

2 Corinthians – ‘Paul’s most autobiographical letter, in which he opens his heart more than in any other’-shows the ‘privileges and pressures of pastoral work’. It also contains ‘unique passages about perseverance under trials, the nature of Christian service, evangelism and giving.’

‘The whole unfolding Let’s Study series is a must for every Christian home that is serious about getting to know the Word.’ — COVENANTER WITNESS

Book Description

The letters of 2 Peter and Jude share several common themes and were designed to strengthen the faith of Christians who were being unsettled by false prophets and teachers within the apostolic churches. Both Peter and Jude show that the problem of false doctrine is nothing new among the people of God. By using examples and warnings from the Old Testament Scriptures they encourage their fellow believers to remain faithful to the gospel, to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus, and to live in the light of Christ’s second coming.

Mark Johnston’s contemporary commentary shows that these themes are as relevant to Christians today as they were in the first century.

As with other volumes in this series, the value of the exposition is enhanced by the Group Study Guide which follows.

‘The whole unfolding Let’s Study series is a must for every Christian home that is serious about getting to know the Word.’ — COVENANTER WITNESS

Book Description

If Romans is, humanly speaking, the most impressive of Paul’s letters, then Ephesians is probably the most elegant. In its opening doxology blessings cascade down upon the reader. In its closing verses the smell of the battlefield lies heavily in the air and through the smoke of war we see Christians, fully clad in the armour of spiritual warfare, still standing. From beginning to end Ephesians sets before us the wonder of God’s grace, the privilege of belonging to the church, and the pattern of life-transformation the gospel produces.

In Let’s Study Ephesians Sinclair Ferguson skillfully leads us through this wonderful letter, explaining its teaching with masterful simplicity and showing its importance and relevance to the church today.

‘The whole unfolding Let’s Study series is a must for every Christian home that is
serious about getting to know the Word.’ — COVENANTER WITNESS

Book Description

Paul’s letter to the churches of Galatia seems to burst on the reader like a sudden storm. The issues it raises still generate controversy, even after two thousand years of church history. In large measure this is because what was at stake when Paul wrote was the gospel itself. The question of whether human works were to play any part in the justification of sinners had to be answered clearly if the fledgling Christian movement was to prosper. And Paul was determined to answer it with total clarity. This explains the vigour and energy of his language, and the impact the letter has had down the centuries.

Derek Thomas explains the issues dealt with in the letter and refutes the contentions of the so-called ‘new perspective’ on Paul. His book is an important addition to this expanding series of study guides.

Book Description

When John Mark wrote out his ‘good news’ about Jesus two thousand years ago, his Gospel was a completely new kind of book. No one had ever written one before. In fact no one would have known what a Gospel was…What made the Gospel of Mark unique was this: it was not written merely as the memoir of Jesus as a great man, not even as the greatest man who had ever lived. Rather it was meant to persuade its readers that Jesus was the Son of God…Who is Jesus of Nazareth? What is the good news (gospel) about him?…This book presents us with Mark’s answer.’

‘The whole unfolding Let’s Study series is a must for every Christian home that is
serious about getting to know the Word.’ — COVENANTER WITNESS

Book Description

As we open the New Testament, Matthew, the first Gospel writer, immediately announces a new beginning. He declares that the day that has now dawned is the new age predicted by all the prophets, the time of the Messiah, the true son of David and of Abraham. This is the thrilling message Matthew brings to us. God has begun something new. Is it really possible that all things can be made new? Can our lives be made new? Can the world be made new? The answer of Matthew and the New Testament is a resounding ‘Yes!’

In this easy-to-understand book, Mark Ross guides the reader through the 28 chapters of Matthew’s Gospel and helps us to apply its teaching to our daily lives. He shows us that in the Person and work of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the long-expected kingdom of God has arrived, and life and salvation are offered to all the nations of the earth. As the writer says, ‘What a message this is – what drama, what pathos, what love, what glory, what longing fulfilled, what hope and promise for us today!’

‘The whole unfolding Let’s Study series is a must for every Christian home that is serious about getting to know the Word.’ — COVENANTER WITNESS

Book Description

Written to the congregation which Paul probably held nearest to his heart, the letter to the Philippians is full of Christ and overflows with a contagious sense of great joy. And no wonder. For among the members of this congregation were such diverse Christian friends as Lydia, the businesswoman whose heart the Lord had gently opened and the local jailer, who, on the night of his conversion, had tenderly cleansed the lash-wounds which covered the apostle’s back.

The church at Philippi was Paul’s ‘crown and joy’. But now, in the apostle’s absence, problems had arisen among these new Christians, threatening their fellowship and witness.

How did Paul respond? What did he say to anchor these young Christians in the truth and guide them in Christian living? In Let’s Study Philippians, Sinclair B. Ferguson leads us through Paul’s memorable answers.

Book Description

Derek Thomas shows that amidst the language and forms that dazzle and shock the book of Revelation is above all a book about Jesus Christ. Thomas takes us through the series of seven visions which show the outworking of the words of Jesus to Peter: ‘I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.’

‘The whole unfolding Let’s Study series is a must for every Christian home that is serious about getting to know the Word.’ — COVENANTER WITNESS

Book Description

Like much of the New Testament, John’s three letters were written to deal with pressing difficulties being experienced in the first-century churches. False teachers, whom John calls ‘antichrists’, were denying fundamental Christian truths and deeply troubling the Christians whom the aged apostle loved and called his ‘little children’. John writes with warmth, seriousness, and urgency to correct this situation. He shows that sound doctrine is vital, not only to the well-being of Christians, but to their very existence, since error leads to deception, darkness, and ultimately the destruction of those who embrace it.

The message of John’s letters is of perennial relevance, and especially important in our own day. Ian Hamilton’s concise commentary provides a warmly pastoral explanation of John’s timeless message, pointing the reader to the Word made flesh, the Lord Jesus Christ, as the answer to all problems in the church, whether in the first or the twenty-first century.

Book Description

Ray Beeley here opens up the meaning of Hosea in a straightforward way, showing that they waywardness of God’s people, in both Old Testament times and New, does not prevent the magnificent display of God’s saving and sanctifying love.

The men whom God used to give the Scriptures were not prepared for their task in an easy, painless way. Rather, their experiences were ordained by God so that, when they delivered God’s Word, they could do so with deep feeling and conviction. This was never more true than in the case of the prophet Hosea, who painful experiences with his wife Gomer prepared him to understand the ways of God with his people. In explaining the meaning of Hosea’s prophecy, Ray Beeley makes frequent helpful reference to the writings of earlier commentators on the book.

‘A judicious and gracious Scotch commentary, after the style of Dickson and Hutcheson.’– C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

Perhaps of all the apostles, most Christians find themselves most readily drawn to Simon Peter. His failure, restoration and subsequent usefulness provide hope for those who face testing and temptation. Despite that, Peter’s twin epistles are probably given less attention than many other sections of the New Testament. But they continue to speak with power and relevance.

They provide encouragement and assurance from one who himself needed both; they give basic instruction in Christian living; they also provide clear teaching on false doctrine. They are therefore essential letters for Christians today.

Nisbet’s outstanding practical treatment is an ideal aid for preachers, teachers, group leaders and all students or readers of the Bible.

Book Description

The Pastoral Epistles, first published in 1874, is the last commentary written by Patrick Fairbairn, but his first on any of the books of the New Testament.

It grew out of Fairbairn’s lectures on pastoral theology to students at the Free Church College, Glasgow, where he served both as Principal and as Professor of Divinity. His purposes in publishing his material were twofold; to benefit students of the Bible, especially ministers and ministerial students, in their grasp and application of the text, and to defend the divine inspiration and apostolic authority of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus against attacks made by contemporary scholarship. In both aims he succeeds admirably.

Book Description

Candlish’s exposition of 1 John was the ripe fruit of years of careful and loving study of the great themes in Johannine teaching. His aim was not so much to produce a detailed technical commentary after the fashion of much exegesis in the new German tradition, but to set on display the heights and depths of the theology of John’s letter: ‘it can be studied aright exegetically, only when it is studied theologically.’ His driving purpose, like that of the apostle, is to see truth and joyful assurance born and brought to maturity in the hearts of his readers. The multi-faceted privileges of fellowship with the Father and the Son through the Spirit are constantly brought to the fore.

‘The more we use Hodge, the more we value him. This applies to all his commentaries.’ — C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

Hodge’s work on 1 and 2 Corinthians forms one of the most significant parts of the plan for a series of ‘popular commentaries’ on the New Testament which he projected with J. A. Alexander in the 1850s. When the early death of Alexander prevented the completion of the series, the individual volumes were quickly prized in their own right and went through many editions on both sides of the Atlantic.

The qualities which have given Hodge’s commentaries such a wide and enduring market are readily to be seen. In the first place they are singularly clear. The technicalities of critical opinion, which soon cause a volume to become dated, are not to be found in his pages. His aim was to produce commentaries which learned and unlearned alike could consult with profit. Believing that he was dealing with the words of the Holy Spirit he endeavoured to set out both what those words contain and the effects which their truth should have upon the conscience and life.

Book Description

The author was the third son of the famous Archibald Alexander, and an eminent Christian teacher in his own right. The Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia described him as the most remarkable linguist ever produced by America. Like his father, Alexander taught at Princeton Theological Seminary, occupying successively the chairs of Oriental and Biblical Literature, Church History, and New Testament Literature. His premature death was called by A.A. Hodge, ‘the most disastrous blow the institutions of Princeton ever experienced’.

Of this Commentary on Acts C. H. Spurgeon wrote, ‘In all respects a work of the highest merit’. J.H. Thornwell held the same opinion: ‘Alexander’s commentaries on Acts and Mark I regarded as models, as nearly perfection in their kind as human skill could make them, and I have been in the habit, not only of recommending them, but of insisting on my classes procuring and studying them’.

Alexander’s merit as a writer lies in his clarity and precision of thought. His great purpose is to state the meaning of the text of Scripture and the continuing demand for his commentaries is one proof of the extent to which he succeeded.

Book Description

C. H. Spurgeon, in his famous work, Commenting and Commentaries, placed Davenant on Colossians in the first rank of commentaries on this Pauline epistle and approvingly quoted the words of Charles Bridges about this volume: ‘I know no exposition upon a detached portion of Scripture (with the single exception of Owen on the Hebrews) that will compare with it in all parts…in depth, accuracy, and discursiveness.’

On the title page of an old Latin edition a satisfied reader made a note of his deep appreciation for Davenant’s masterpiece: ‘Don’t abuse this good old book: for it is an extraordinary piece, and the best Exposition on St. Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians that ever was published…and I am afraid there will never be a better so long as the world endures.’

The Methodist preacher James Hervey expressed his appreciation of this commentary in more measured terms. ‘For perspicuity of style and accuracy of method; for judgment in discerning and fidelity in representing the Apostle’s meaning; for strength of argument in refuting errors, and felicity of invention in deducing practical doctrines, tending both to the establishment of faith, and the cultivation of holiness, it is inferior to no writing of the kind; and richly deserves to be read, to be studied, to be imitated, by our young divines.’

On the strength of such high recommendations as these, the Trust is making available this ‘much praised’ commentary with the prayer that it will continue to instruct, encourage, and sanctify the faith and life of Christian people in the 21st century.

‘Spurgeon always provides a solid meal and sustenance on which one can live … Never was the truth he preached and proclaimed, in such a winsome and powerful manner, more needed than today.’– D. MARTYN LLOYD-JONES

Book Description

This is a newly typeset edition of the only commentary on a complete New Testament book ever written by C. H. Spurgeon. Originally published as The Gospel of the Kingdom, it was largely written during the last days of the great preacher’s life. ‘Such words acquire a solemnity and pathos with which nothing else could invest them’, wrote Mrs. Susannah Spurgeon when first introducing the volume in 1893 shortly after the death of her husband. ‘We listen almost as to a voice “from the excellent glory”.’

Spurgeon’s Commentary on Matthew therefore represents the fruit of a lifetime spend in the study and exposition of Scripture. It bears all the hallmarks of the genius of one who in his day was known as ‘the Prince of Preachers’- reverence for the very words of Scripture, faithful teaching, deep insight, practical application, profound simplicity and spiritual power. Above all, from start to finish, the reader is struck by the author’s unbounded devotion to and commendation of the Lord Jesus Christ- the King who is himself the gospel of the kingdom.

Book Description

John Calvin was a practical and pastoral theologian. Like the Apostle Paul he worked tirelessly ‘for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness’ (Titus 1:1). For him knowledge of the truth was for living, and living was for the glory of God. All of Calvin’s preaching, teaching, and writing was directed to this one great end, to serve the church of Jesus Christ so that all ‘may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory’ (2 Tim. 2:10).

This book is an abridgement of Calvin’s commentary on the Psalms, reducing it to about one quarter of its original size. It is the result of a labour of love undertaken by one who has for some years used Calvin on the Psalms in his devotional reading of Scripture, and who has grown to appreciate Calvin’s method of exposition, his faithfulness to the biblical text, and his practical application of the truth to daily living.

But why abridge Calvin? The sad fact is that few teachers and preachers of the gospel today ever use any of Calvin’s commentaries. Some busy pastors and ministers balk at the sheer scale of Calvin’s five-volume commentary on the Psalms, (which forms part of a much larger twenty-two-volume set). Others tend to shy away from Calvin’s writings, mistakenly thinking that such are the preserve of academics and theologians, and not of the whole church. Alas, nothing could be further from the truth!

This abridgement has been made with such people in mind. It is not intended to deprive readers of the full benefit of Calvin’s unabridged text, but to edify those who otherwise might remain strangers to Calvin’s practical and pastoral wisdom. Indeed, in the view of the publisher the editor’s noble aims have been fully met, that in this single volume ‘something of the unsurpassed excellence of Calvin’s instruction will have been preserved and made available to a wider public than would ever have made use of the original massive and magisterial work.’

Here, then, is a treasure chest containing a choice selection of the wonderful riches to be found in Calvin’s commentary on the Psalms.

Book Description

In his Introduction Dr. Wilbur Smith writes: ‘In a day like this in which we are living, when the governments of the world are breaking up, in a day when a vast part of the earth is controlled by a merciless dictatorship, when multitudes of Christians have already known persecution, and many more will before this age ends, there is hardly any book in the Old Testament we could read with more profit than the book of Daniel and scarcely a commentary on any portion of the Old Testament quite so profitable as Calvin’s two volumes on Daniel.

I suppose nothing on the prayer of Daniel, occupying most of the ninth chapter of his prophecy, has ever been written so rich and deep and comprehensive as the 17,000 words which Calvin devotes to the sixteen verses of this marvellous outpouring of the heart of the ancient prophet.’

This volume has been reprinted from the Calvin Translation Society two volume edition of 1852-53, edited by Thomas Myers.

Endorsement

‘The Scriptural method of exposition so well carried out by Bridges renders all his writings very suggestive to ministers. While explaining the passage in hand, he sets other portions of the word in new lights.’– C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

Charles Bridges’ commentary on Ecclesiastes shows that this neglected book of Scripture is:

  • Relevant for today. Our land needs to be awakened to the futility of seeking happiness without God.
  • Clear when interpreted in the light of its overall theme.
  • Suitable not merely for ‘the light-hearted and thoughtless’ but for ‘the most eminent saint of God’.
  • Necessary. ‘On no account could we have spared this book from the canon. It has its own sphere of instruction and that of no common value’.
  • Harmonious with the New Testament. ‘We cannot fully enforce and apply Ecclesiastes except by the aid of Gospel light’.
  • Sanctifying. The message of the book is designed to bring men to complete consecration to God, as Bridges declares: ‘The men that we want are lively, warm, real men- men who have a daily contact with a personal living Saviour- men whose religion is the element in which they breathe, the principle by which they work- men who think of life as the seed time for eternity’.
