Book Description

It is evident why Boston’s work enjoyed such popularity.  So basic is his material, and so thorough his presentation of it, the Human Nature in its fourfold State speaks to the spiritual needs of every reader.  For those who ask about the origin and meaning of human existence, Boston provides the biblical answer; for those who are confused about the Christian gospel, Boston explains its meaning and its power.

  1. Ken Bissell

This book has been immensely helpful to my spiritual growth and comfort. Written in that beautifully Puritan pastoral style, yet pointed in it’s clear theology. He keeps us humbly before our righteous Savior as we examine ourselves to see if we are truly in Christ, and as I need to hear, he does not let me go astray in imaginings. Thank you Mr. Boston and Banner of Truth.

    The Fourfold State

Quite simply this is the most searching and earnest presentation of the gospel I have come across. Boston is thoroughly taken up by his charge to preach Christ and call on people to escape the wrath to come and this pulses through every page.

First, the book is a wonderfully clear and practical exposition of Reformed covenant theology. Boston shows the nature and importance of the covenant of works with Adam and the covenant of grace in Christ. I found this an invaluable corrective to modern evangelical presentations of the gospel.

Secondly, Fourfold State is relentlessly Christ focussed. The reader is never sent back to themselves and their own resources but is encouraged everywhere to rest on Christ and cling to him.

Thirdly, Boston is quite breathtaking in his eternal focus. I have not read any book that is so consistent in its presentation of the eternal consequences of our lives now. It forces you to face the reality of death and the eternal state and then weigh up this world in those scales.

Without a doubt we need this book today!

  3. Dr Paul Godden

A truly excellent read. Very practical on our living union with Christ. A must-read.

  4. Billy

Excellent treatise exploring deep intricate spiritual matters in classic Puritan style. This volume sorted out alot of issues in my quest to understand human nature. Read with Hodges’ The way of Life, many theological strands are neatly knotted together. I highly recommend it’s reading!
