We are delighted to announce that as of January 2024, we have a podcast channel! The Magazine Podcast is a new departure for us, and will, Lord-willing, enable us to reach new audiences, and existing readers in a fresh way.

The Magazine began 68 years ago, and with many fine articles on theology, church history, practical Christian living, and biography in our back-catalogue, we want to re-deploy these in an effective way.

The first three episodes are already up and available wherever you get your podcasts, and we warmly invite you to have a listen. The initial episode includes a fascinating interview with our General Manager, John Rawlinson, who explains how the magazine was started, before the Banner had published any books or held any conferences. That same episode includes a reading of Iain Murray’s landmark first editorial, which expressed the burden which has informed so much of what the Banner has been and done since then.

May this podcast be a blessing to many, wherever they may be listening!

Episode 1: ‘The King’s Business Requireth Haste!’: Introducing the Magazine Podcast

Episode 2: The Congregation on Two Continents

One of the most outstanding ‌biblical commentators since the Reformation is John Brown (1784–1858), the grandson of John Brown of Haddington. Brown occupied the chair of exegetical theology in the United Secession Church and then in the United Presbyterian Church. His exegetical commentaries (The Trust has published his Discourses and Sayings of Our Lord, Galatians, Hebrews, and his exposition of 1 Peter 5:8–11, The Christian’s Great Enemy) are models of thoughtful exegesis and penetrating pastoral and ministerial application. Recently, while preparing to preach on Gal. 6:14, But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world, I was struck by the following comment in Brown’s Commentary on Galatians:

(Paul’s) declaration ought to be employed for the purpose of self-enquiry. Is the world crucified to us by the cross of Christ, and are we by that cross crucified to the world?…Men to whom the world is not crucified, are certainly not believers; and men professing Christianity, who are not ‘crucified to the world’—men whom the world loves and honours—have cause to stand in doubt of themselves. Where the cross holds the place in the heart which it did in the apostle’s, and exercises the influence over the character and conduct it did in him, it will be equally clear that the world is crucified to the individual, and he to the world.

Brown is not content, as Paul was not content, simply to state the doctrine that an authentic Christian boasts, glories, in the cross of Christ. If we truly boast alone in the cross of Christ, two things will of necessity follow: We will no longer pant after the praise, the plaudits, the rewards, the good favour of this world. And conversely, if we truly boast alone in the cross of Christ, the world will write us off as nobodies, just as it writes off the Son of God, the Lord of glory, the Lord Jesus Christ, as a nobody. Oh, the world is ever ready to say good things about Jesus, the teacher from Nazareth. But the moment you speak of his incarnate life, his virginal conception, his perfect Law keeping, his substitutionary, sin atoning, wrath quenching, death defeating, Satan conquering cross and resurrection, everything changes!

Brown is urging us to apply Paul’s words for the ‘purposes of self-enquiry’. Is there anything more likely to search out our hearts than what we read in Galatians 6:14, especially the latter half of the verse?

The present condition of evangelical Christianity should give us cause for concern. The thought that a believer should seriously take to heart Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 13:5, ‘Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!’, is rarely heard from pulpits. It is true, sadly true, that the grace and duty of self-examination can become an overly introspective, even demoralizing exercise. The moment we forget that all our hope and assurance lies outside of ourselves in our Saviour, that moment the life of faith becomes clinical, even sterile. Faith, to use John Murray’s striking word, is essentially ‘extraspective’. The glory of faith is not its quality but its object, the glorious Person and saving work of the Lord Jesus Christ. That said, self-enquiry is a duty and grace the word of God encourages us to take seriously.

With this in mind, ask yourself these two questions:

How do I view this world? Do I see it as my God sees it, lost, in darkness, heading for his righteous judgement? Do I see it as an object of my pity, not of my delight? Am I secretly longing for this world to recognize me, think well of me, embrace me in its friendship? (remember, ‘friendship with the world is enmity with God’, James 4:4). Am I persuaded that this world and its desires are ‘passing away’, but that he who does the will of God lives forever? (1 John 2:17).

How does this world view me? Is it happy to acknowledge me? Is it content to let me live out my faith because I say and do nothing to offend its values and convictions? Does this world find me inoffensive, undemanding, someone who turns a blind eye to its smutty jokes, its misogyny, its twisted sexuality, its blasphemies?

Self-enquiry can be deeply unsettling. Christians need regularly to place their lives alongside the life of the Lord Jesus Christ and ask if the perfect template of godliness that was first etched in his humanity by the Holy Spirit is in any way, however dimly, being etched in their lives. Our Father’s grand design is to conform us to the likeness of his Son (Rom. 8:29). He had no sin, but we do. He had no need to mortify the deeds of the body, but we do. But like us, he was tempted in every way just as we are (Heb. 4:15), and needed the help of the Holy Spirit to stand and go on faithfully to the last. It is alone with the gracious help of the Holy Spirit that we can put the sin that yet remains to trouble us to death (Rom. 8:13).

If Christians truly are what the Lord Jesus says they are, light and salt in a dark and putrefying world (Matt. 5:13-16), then self-enquiry should be a regular discipline in their lives. However, let me say again, self-enquiry that is not done in union with Christ, that is done rather in a spirit of self-beating or self-preening, is soul-killing and gospel-denying.

I often think of these words of Robert Murray M‘Cheyne: ‘For every one look at yourself, take ten looks at Jesus Christ’. That is healthy spiritual advice.

Many will testify that it is the Banner Conferences, just as much as the books and magazine, that have been used of the Lord to strengthen their faith, encourage them in discipleship and ministry, and connect them with like-minded brethren. It is with great joy, then, that we are once again offering our Spring Youth and Ministers’ conferences following a Covid-contingent hiatus.

What is more, for this year the main sessions of these conferences, as well as a special Book Expo (with discount code!) will be accessible to those who register to join us online, via Hopin.

The Youth Conference is intended for young people over the age of 16 who are keen to explore further what it is to live the Christian life in an age profoundly ignorant of true Christianity. The sessions will range from the nature of the Bible, to the character of Christ and the free offer of the Gospel, to what can be learned from the outstanding 17th-century Puritan John Flavel.

The Ministers’ Conference is designed for men who are or have been in a ministerial charge in the local church. With this virtual invitation, we pray the conference will also be a blessing to others who may not be in ministry, but have a heart to live out and promote historic, biblical Christianity in our time. Our theme for this year is nothing less than the heartbeat of the Christian life,  communion with God, and all of its benefits.

To sign up to join us at the Youth Conference, from April 22nd to 25th, please click here. To attend the Ministers’ Conference as an online delegate, from April 25th to 28th, please follow this link. We do hope you’ll consider taking the time to join us.

We realize that this year it has been difficult to travel long distances for conferences, and we understand that the term ‘livestream’ may have lost some of the interest it once held as we have all become more accustomed to watching live events through a computer screen. So, this year, instead of streaming our USA East Coast Ministers’ Conference on social media, we have created a ‘virtual conference’ for those who are unable to come to Elizabethtown.

Registration is free, and ‘attendees’ will have the opportunity not only to watch the livestream of the physical conference sessions, but also to view an exhibition of some recent publications from the Banner, have access to some special book prices, and attend a fellowship session during the course of the event. We hope that even if you cannot make it to Elizabethtown, this experience will be spiritually refreshing to you as you seek to be devoted to Christ’s Church this year.

To register for the event, follow this link. Registration is open now so you can go ahead and register and set a reminder in your calendar. The virtual conference opens on Tuesday 25 May at 3:00pm EST, 8pm UK time, and the opening session starts at 3:30pm EST, 8:30pm UK time (note that when you register and enter the event, the schedule shown to you in reception will localise to your time-zone).

Latest news: 11 March 2021:

We regret to announce that in the light of the ongoing Covid restrictions we have made the decision to cancel the Ministers’ Conference and Youth Conference for this year. We have looked at all kinds of options but the slow speed at which restrictions are being lifted presents us and Yarnfield Park Conference Centre with such difficulties that we have sadly concluded that there is no way that we can realistically meet in person this April.

We are very grateful for the support that many have shown for our work in booking for the conferences and very sorry to have to disappoint you in this way. We will get refunds processed for you over the next few days.

We rest in the knowledge that our merciful and faithful God is in control, and although our plans may be thwarted, his sovereign will and plans are being worked out to his glory and honour in this world.

If you have questions or queries about the conferences, please email info@banneroftruth.co.uk

This article is the contents of an address first given in February 2020 at the Westminster Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Newcastle, UK.

* * *

It is one of the glories of the gospel that it is universal in scope. There is nothing narrow or limited about the good news of salvation. It is, Matt. 28:19, for ‘all the nations’. This truth has inspired the great missionary movements of the church, it has led to the world being turned upside down on many occasions (Acts 17:6), and it is still changing lives throughout the world today. Because of the universality of the gospel offer the day is coming when, Rev. 7:9, a ‘great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues’ will stand ‘before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes’. It is my privilege to open up to you now this world changing free, unrestricted, offer of the gospel to all.

And I hope to cover the free offer of the gospel the morning by asking a series of questions–up to six maybe, but we will see how time goes.

1. What is ‘the gospel’?

If we are going to speak about the offer of ‘the gospel’, we need to know what the gospel itself is. And, as we heard yesterday, the ultimate answer to this question is Jesus Christ himself. Jesus Christ in all the glory of his person and work is the gospel. He alone is the good news that the gospel proclaims. The gospel that Paul preached is none other than ‘Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures . . . He was buried, and . . . rose again the third day according to the Scriptures’ (1 Cor. 15:3). Jesus is the sum and substance of the Gospel. His person, his life, death and resurrection constitute the ‘good news’ of salvation. And so, when we speak of the free offer of the gospel, we are really speaking of the offering of Jesus Christ to the world. John Murray is exactly right to say, ‘It is Christ in all the glory of his person and in all the perfection of his finished work whom God offers in the gospel.1

2. What do we mean by ‘offer’? Or what is it to offer Jesus Christ to sinners?

To understand this, let’s look at some of the images the bible uses to explain the gospel offer. One of the most common is an invitation. This is the image we are given in the parable of the wedding banquet in Matthew 22:1-14 (and in Luke 14:15-24). Here Jesus says the good news of the gospel is like ‘a king who gave a wedding feast for his son’ (Matt. 22:2, ESV). Now before any wedding feast, invitations are given out. And so here, the King ‘sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding’ (Matt. 22:3).

But as we will know, those invited ‘were not willing to come’ (Matt. 22:3). However, in this parable, the King, far from immediately rejecting those who turned down his invitation, invites them again, and increases the weight of the invitation by describing the glory of the wedding feast: ‘Tell those who are invited, See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.’ (Matt. 22:4). Despite this plea, those invited continue to spurn the invitation (Matt. 22:5). And so far, the parable is a picture of Israel rejecting the gospel invitations given to them.

However, there was still a royal wedding, and there needed to be guests. So the invitation to the feast and news that ‘all things are ready’ now went out more widely: ‘Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding’ (Matt. 22:9). And the invitation went out until ‘the wedding hall was filled with guests’ (Matt. 22:10). It’s a picture of the gospel invitation going throughout all the world until all God’s people are saved, and ready for ‘the marriage supper of the Lamb’ (Rev. 19:9).

This parable, and many other places in scripture, show us the gospel offer is an invitation to the gospel feast.

But it is more than that. It is an invitation accompanied with pleading, and entreaty. We see this clearly in 2 Corinthians 5:20, where the apostle Paul says, ‘Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.’ Paul is here presenting the gospel to the Corinthian church. Churches are full of sinners who need the gospel. And the terms he uses are staggering. The gospel is a ‘pleading’ and it is an ‘imploring’. The invitations of the gospel are not dispassionate things, they are soaked with every ounce of emotional energy. A father pleading with his son not to ruin his life. A mother imploring her daughter to turn from a destructive path. This is the nature of the gospel offer–passionate pleading. Just as we read last night in Rom. 10:21: ‘All day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and contrary people.’ The gospel is an entreaty, it is to be shared with beseeching, with tears, with open arms.

The gospel offer is also described in the Bible as a selling. The classic passage which does this is Isaiah 55, and particularly verses 1-3. There the gospel is compared to a great food market where all that is on offer is available at no cost. Isa. 55:1, ‘Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.’ In the gospel offer Jesus Christ, to speak with reverence, is put up for sale, with no price needed. As the great seventeenth century Scottish theologian James Durham titled one of his sermons, ‘the best wares at the lowest rates.’ The gospel offer is free.

Now, what is obvious in any selling process is that you want to close the sale, you want the goods or service to be purchased. Isaiah shows that is true with the gospel sale as he goes on to plead, Isa. 55:2, ‘Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy?’ Consider, he says, the competing alternatives to Jesus. . . they are worthless, leaving you empty! Isaiah’s gospel sale calls them to realise this, and then he continues, Isa. 55:2, ‘Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance’. Use your reason, discern the difference between the worthless things that consume your life’s energies and the good news of the gospel. See the abundance of spiritual fare that is available for free in Jesus Christ, next to the vanity of the world’s pleasures.

Isaiah goes on to emphasise the earnestness of the desired sale by repeating the invitation, Isa. 55:3, ‘Incline your ear, and come to me’. And he presses on to induce acceptance by promising great blessings to those who do accept the invitation. Isa. 55:3, ‘Hear, and your soul shall live; I will make an everlasting covenant with you — The sure mercies of David’ (Isa. 55:3).

The gospel offer is an earnest sales process where the pearl of great price is offered to all for free.

The gospel offer is many more things. It is a command. Acts 17:30, ‘Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because he has appointed a day on which he will judge the world.’ It is a warning, Luke 13:3, ‘except you repent you will likewise perish.’ Every warning is an implied offer of mercy. Doubt that, and go and consider Jonah’s message to Nineveh. The gospel offer is also a conditional promise, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household’ (Acts 16:31).

All these things encompass the multifaceted gospel offer.

3. Who offers the gospel?

It is obvious that the gospel offer is given through human agency. Preachers audibly proclaim the gospel in their sermons. In evangelism it is the man or woman doing the evangelising who offers Christ to those they are engaging with. But behind this is a glorious truth: the real offeror of the gospel is God. Fundamentally, it is God who invites, who pleads, who sells, who commands, who warns, and who promises.

We can see that the Old Testament gospel invitations of the prophets were really God’s personal invitations. Consider 2 Chronicles 36:14-16: ‘the Lord God of their fathers sent warnings to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending them, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place. But they mocked the messengers of God, despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets.’ When the prophets spoke to Israel they did so as God’s messengers, and if they were rejected it was the very word of God that the people ‘despised.’ Every call to repentance, to receive mercy, to have sins forgiven in the Old Testament was a call from the living God. That is why we have the complaint of God in Psalm 81:13, ‘Oh, that my people would listen to me, That Israel would walk in my ways!’ It was God who was calling them.

And it is the same in the New Testament. The great verse New Testament which shows us that the gospel invitation is God’s invitation is 2 Corinthians 5:20. We have seen this verse already but let’s listen to it again: ‘Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God’ (2 Cor. 5:20). Here is imploring, pleading, begging for the gospel to be embraced. But this imploring is not just from the preacher. The preacher is an ‘ambassador for Christ’ and so it is ‘as though God were pleading through us.’ The preacher’s pleading is God’s pleading. And that is because the preacher, like the Old Testament prophet, has no words of his own. They are ambassadors, they are to have no message except the one their King gives them. And so, gospel invitations, gospel pleadings in preaching do not belong to the preacher only, they are God’s word to lost sinners.

To return to an earlier quote from John Murray, ‘it is Christ in all the glory of his person and in all the perfection of his finished work whom God offers in the gospel.2

4. Who is the gospel offered to?

In one sense this might seem a question that doesn’t need to be asked. It is prima facie evident that as God ‘commands all men everywhere to repent’ (Acts 17:30) the gospel is for all. It is hard to conceive of a statement more universal than ‘all. . . everywhere’.

But what about passages which restrict the gospel is restricted to the ‘thirsty’. For example, a passage we have already looked at, Isa. 55:1, reads, ‘Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat.’ It seems only the ‘thirsty’ are invited. But who does Isaiah mean by the thirsty? Well, in Isaiah, a lack of water or being in thirst, indicates the judgement of God against sin.  Just one example: ‘For you shall be like an oak whose leaf withers, and like a garden without water’ (Isa. 1:30, ESV).

So, when Isaiah says ‘come everyone who thirsts’ he is not restricting the invitation, but rather saying ‘Come sinners, come sinners under the judgment of God.’  And that is every individual.

We see further that Isaiah is not restricting his invitation because he invites those with ‘no money’ (Isa. 55:1).  No-one earns access to this invitation by ‘thirsting’ after something as some qualifying mark. That would be to bring ‘money’. No, the invitation is free to all. . . without money and without price.

Now it is very true that only those who are convicted of sin will value a Saviour. It is not the self righteous but sinners who will embrace Jesus Christ as Saviour. But while that truth may explain who will embrace the gospel offer, it places no restriction on who the gospel offer is to. The gospel offer is to all.

5)  Perhaps the big question: What is God’s attitude in the gospel offer? Can we say that God want all hearers of the gospel offer to accept Christ?

This is an important question and Professor John Murray states ‘It would appear that the real point in dispute in connection with the free offer of the gospel is whether it can properly be said that God desires the salvation of all men.3

Let’s begin exploring this with a general point. When God commands something, it is a legitimate deduction that what he commands is pleasing to him, so when God calls us to love him and to love our neighbour (Mark 12:30-31), it is clear that these are things that God wants us to do. To do these things is, Heb. 13:2, to ‘do his will’ which ‘is well pleasing in his sight’. Conversely to fail to do what God asks is to displease him, Ps. 5:4, ‘You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness’.

So, because the gospel is a command to all everywhere, by definition we must say that God wants all people everywhere to embrace the gospel offer. This is pleasing to him and the rejection of the gospel offer is displeasing, contrary to his delights.

We see this clearly in the classic passages in Ezekiel dealing with God’s attitude towards the wicked, Ezek. 18 and Ezek. 33. Ezekiel 18 teaches that God never takes pleasure in the death of any wicked person: ‘Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? says the Lord God, and not that he should turn from his ways and live?’ (Ezek. 18:23). This truth, that God does not desire the death of the wicked, is the very basis for the gospel offer. Ezek. 18:31-32 says ‘I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies, says the Lord God. Therefore turn and live!’ It is because of the character of God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies’ that there is the appeal ‘therefore turn and live’. If we do not understand God’s pleasure in all sinners turning to him, we undercut the very basis for the gospel appeal, ‘turn and live’.

Ezekiel returns to this same theme in chapter 33. Israel were complaining that their sins would not be forgiven, Ezek. 33:10, ‘If our transgressions and our sins lie upon us, and we pine away in them, how can we then live?’  And God comes to them and strengthens what he has previously said with an oath, Ezek. 33:11, ‘As I live, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’ We cannot deny God’s pleasure in any and all sinners turning to him without denying the very being of our God. Seeing as he could swear by no greater that this is true, God swore by himself, by his own eternal superabundant life. He has set his own life as the seal that he desires all sinners to repent and find life, ‘As I live’. Because of this, the compassionate loving call comes, ‘Turn, turn from your evil ways.’

We also see God’s heart for all to embrace the gospel clearly in the life and ministry of Jesus. And we should expect this as Jesus is the one who is ‘the exact representation of his being’ (Heb. 1:3, NIV). And nowhere do we see Jesus display the Father more clearly than in his laments and tears over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41-2, Matt. 23:37 and Luke 13:34-35).

In Luke 19 Jesus draws near to Jerusalem for the last time, and as he sees the city he is profoundly impacted. He sees the city on which God has placed his own name: ‘I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name may be there’ (2 Chron. 6:6), a city God’s prophets had ministered to for centuries, faithfully calling its inhabitants to love God and serve him. This is the city where the temple and the sacrifices were, and as Jesus sees this city spread out before him, ‘he wept over it’ (Luke 19:41). Knowing that this city will gladly and wilfully put him to death. Knowing this is the city which killed the prophets and stoned the messengers sent to her, even over her, Jesus sheds tears.

And this shows us the heart of Jesus towards all. As Jesus weeps tears over unbelieving Jerusalem, as Jesus weeps over sinners worse than those in Sodom and Gomorrah (Matt. 11:23-24). As Jesus sheds tears he is telling us, I am not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

And remember, Jesus’ tears of compassion are not the tears of a mere man. The tears of Jesus are human tears, but they reveal God’s attitude of compassion. We cannot, and must not, imagine that here in these tears the will of the human nature is at variance with the will of the divine nature of the Son. Or worse that the person of the Son is at variance with the will of the Father and the Spirit. The tears are properly the tears of a man, but they express the heart of the Son, and because they do, they reveal the heart of our Triune God.

Now Jesus, with tears on his cheeks, explicitly tells us the reason for his weeping. He cries out, Luke 19:42 (ESV), ‘Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace!’ Jesus is weeping because Jerusalem rejected salvation in him. He had invited Jerusalem, ‘Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest’ (Matt. 11:28), and here he laments over their refusal, showing the reality of his call to Jerusalem to turn to him and live. When Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:35) those who saw this were brought to say, ‘See how he loved him!’ (John 11:36), and no less do Jesus’ tears over Jerusalem show his gospel love for the unbelieving city.

To sum up this point, again a quote from Professor John Murray, ‘the gospel is not simply an offer or invitation, but also implies that God delights that those to whom the offer comes would enjoy what is offered in all its fullness.’4

6. So how does the gospel offer relate to common grace?

God shows common grace to all in many ways. Psalm 33:5 tells us that ‘The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord’ or ‘full of his unfailing love’ (NIV). God positively fills the world, despite its sin and brokenness, with his kindness, mercy, love and common grace. Ps. 145:8-9: ‘The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy. The Lord is good to all, And his tender mercies are over all his works.’ It is this unchanging and unchangeable character of God as gracious, compassionate and longsuffering that causes him to be good to his fallen world and show it mercy.

And why does God show his goodness to all? Because he loves all his creatures. This is the simple and beautiful teaching of Matthew 5:44-48 (and Luke 6:27-36). Matthew records Jesus exhorting his disciples, Matt. 5:44, ‘love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you”. Now why are they to do this? So that, Matt. 5:45, ‘you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust’. The disciples are called to love their enemies that they might share in the family resemblance of the Father. He is the archetype of one who loves his enemies. He is the one who shows his love by doing good to those who hate him. As we have in Luke, ‘But love your enemies. . . and you will be sons of the Most High. For he is kind to the unthankful and evil’ (Luke 6:35-36).

Now, in one sense it is obvious that if gifts like sun, rain, food and so on show God’s common grace and love, then the wonderful gospel invitation must as well. It is a greater spiritual blessing to have the bread of life offered to an individual than for them to have daily bread. To have the good news preached to an individual is a great kindness, and it must, as such, flow from the mercy and love of God.

We see this in the reflection on the history of Israel’s rebellion that we have in Nehemiah 9. Israel are described as those who ‘acted presumptuously’ who ‘stiffened their neck’ and who ‘did not obey your commandments’ (Neh. 9:16-17, ESV). Yet to this reprobate people, God showed himself to be ‘“a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love’ (Neh. 9:17, ESV). Common grace and love, poured out on an unsaved and ungrateful people to such an extent that even when they worshiped the golden calf, ‘you in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness’ (Neh. 9:19, ESV). And this pattern of love and grace shown to an unthankful people was repeated through Israel’s history, Neh. 9:27-30:

According to your great mercies you gave them saviours who saved them from the hand of their enemies. . . many times you delivered them according to your mercies. And you warned them in order to turn them back to your law. Yet they acted presumptuously and did not obey your commandments. . . Many years you bore with them and warned them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet they would not give ear.

All though Israel’s history, having the gospel offer showed them God’s love, and his patient merciful dealings with them in restraining his judgement showed them his mercy and grace.

Many New Testament passages also show that the gospel offer is an expression of grace and love. We have considered the wonderful gospel invitation in 2 Cor. 5:20 before: ‘We implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God’. Paul goes on from this to say to the Corinthians, 2 Cor. 6:1, ‘We then, as workers together with him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain’. Paul (together with Christ) sees the gospel invitation as an expression of grace and calls on the Corinthians not to reject and despise the grace of the gospel offer. The gospel offer is given that sinners would come to Christ. To reject it, is to make it ‘vain’. Paul also calls the gospel offer grace in Titus 2:11, where he says ‘the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people’ (NIV). The gospel is grace for all. Jesus is offered to all. All are invited and commanded to take him as their redeemer. All have this kindness and grace shown to them.

Practical Application

Let me now close with a few points of practical application.

First, the gospel offer is integral to our system of theology. If we get the gospel offer wrong, we get by consequence so many other areas of our theology and practice wrong. The Westminster Standards link the gospel offer to covenant theology (Westminster Confession 7:3), to the doctrine of the church (Larger Catechism Q&A 63), to the nature of effectual calling (Larger Catechism Q&A 67 and 68), and they link it to the nature of faith. Shorter Catechism Q&A 86 defines faith ‘a saving grace, whereby we receive and rest upon him alone for salvation, as he is offered to us in the gospel.’ And this is important: to get the gospel offer wrong is to undercut the very ground of faith, for it is only as Christ is freely offered to all that he can be ‘received’ and ‘rested upon’ by any.5 As John Murray has said: ‘It is only in reference to the full and free overture of Christ in the gospel that a true conception of faith in Christ can be entertained.’6 The gospel offer impacts so much of our theology and practice.

Second, we need to ensure a warm, heartfelt gospel offer is central to our preaching. Does our preaching regularly see us inviting, pleading with, beseeching, warning, commanding sinners to receive Jesus Christ? Do our ministries and congregations have arms stretched out all the day long to disobedient and gainsaying people? Would people get the impression from our preaching that God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked?

That is why is is so important to fix in our minds and hearts that God desires, delights in the salvation of all. That the gospel is an expression of common grace and love. Our hearts cannot be compassionate to all, unless we believe that reflects God’s posture and attitude in the gospel.

Third, give no room to objections against the free offer of the gospel. The doctrine of the free offer of the gospel that I have outlined has been objected to on practical and theological grounds. Objections range from those who use the gospel offer to undermine God’s sovereignty, to other theologians who use God’s sovereignty to undermine the gospel offer!

Indeed many critics of the gospel offer take a scriptural truth and draw (supposedly) logical deductions from that truth to prevent scripture so clearly saying what it does in another area. For instance we could reason, if God has chosen only some to eternal life (true), then he cannot invite all sincerely to be saved (false). Or if Christ has died only for his sheep (true), then there is no gospel to offer to all (false). But this way of doing theology is wholly wrongheaded. We are never to abstract one truth from the context of scripture and deduce from that what the rest of the Bible must teach on a topic. Rather we take the holistic teaching of scripture, and accept it, in this case that the God of sovereign electing grace who gave his Son to die for his bride the church also lovingly, graciously invites all to believe and be saved. God’s sovereignty and the gospel offer are never to be set against one another, they are both to be embraced. Indeed they are really harmonious truths, for as John Murray said, ‘it is upon the crest of the wave of divine sovereignty and of limited atonement that the full and free offer of the gospel breaks upon our shores.7

Readers will be interested to know that the Trust is soon to re-issue Robert Traill in two volumes. There are a number of reasons why Traill deserves to be reprinted. First, his long and active life spanned the period of the Puritan Age. Born in 1642, almost on the eve of the Westminster Assembly, he passed his early years in the Cromwellian era, was exiled to Holland at the Restoration and, on returning to Britain, settled into the Presbyterian ministry in the south of England. Traill rubbed shoulders with all that was best in the Scottish, Dutch and English Puritan traditions.

Secondly, Traill is eminently spiritual and edifying. If some of the Puritans who have come down to us may at times be chargeable with an excessive addiction to ‘branching’ sermons, to Latinisms, to heaviness of style, to contemporary allusions now obscure to men, or to a tendency to spiritualisation, Traill is almost entirely free from such charges. Schooled basically in the Scottish tradition, he concealed his theological erudition under a cloak of true modesty and, crucifying all artistry and literary effect, he strove to open up the naked word of God in homely idiom. His aim was to expose the heart of his hearers to the scrutiny of God alone. The modern reader of Traill therefore will not find him quaint or liable to jar on one’s exegetical finesse.

There may perhaps be even a certain timeliness in this reissue of Traill — a timeliness for the friends of the Reformed movement. He was not primarily concerned to be an academic theologian (though his ability would have qualified him to have aspired to this); nor was he even a writer really at all (though he highly valued the writings of his Reformed brethren). Practically his whole effort was made in the pulpit and from the pulpit, so that what remains to us of Traill’s labours consists almost wholly of sermons — and sermons, too, preached for a particular congregation, with no eye to publication at a later date. Indeed he was so far from ‘rushing into print’ that sermons for the press had to be (in his own phrase) ‘extorted’ from him. Yet in these choice sermons, rescued from oblivion by the affectionate labours of short-hand note-makers who heard him, he furnishes us with so many models of what a sermon ought to be. It could be that our greatest quest as a generation should be for the recovery of Traill’s gift of conveying powerful thought in simple diction from the pulpit.

It could be also that we have something to learn from Traill’s whole ministerial thrust and emphasis. His sermons somehow carry one along with them by the sheer force of truth. One takes up the sermons in order to see the preacher; one lays them down at length having had a glimpse of one’s own heart. You start to read as a critic; before long you find you are cringing away from the preacher’s keen scrutiny of yourself. Not that Traill is predominantly stern, still less severe, least of all fulminating. On the contrary, his spirit is quite even and serene. But he prints in indelible ink and is a holy man. His sword slays not because he is full of fury but because of his nearness to God. In the day when we recover his secret we may see the tide turn.

No adequate life of Robert Traill has appeared to date and the materials for composing a sketch of his long and active life still have to be drawn from scanty notices prefaced to his collected works or from similar sources.

We learn from the prefaces that the Traill (or Trail) family of Fifeshire first emerged from the mists of antiquity around the year 1385 when we hear of one Walter Traill, created Bishop of the Metropolitan See of St Andrews by King Robert II. Two hundred and fifty years later, the name of Robert Traill, father of the subject of this memoir, is indissolubly linked with the mighty who espoused and championed the Reformed cause in Scotland in the seventeenth century.

This elder Robert Traill was minister of the Greyfriars Church a little above the Grassmarket of Edinburgh. Both places are historic, the former as the scene of the signing of the 1638 Covenant; the latter as the place of execution for many a field-preacher.

The younger Robert Traill, the subject of our present concern, was born in Elie, Fifeshire, in May 1642. Here his eminent father was labouring in his first charge. His early education had been supervised by his father who evidently poured his son’s mind and heart into the perfect mould of truth. Only a few years later the young Robert entered the literary and theological classes of the still young Edinburgh University, there to obtain distinction. He gave himself while still young to the Lord and set his heart on the work of the gospel-ministry. It is of interest to us to know that he early became intimate with William Guthrie of Fenwick in Ayrshire (author of The Christian’s Great Interest). Much later he was to accompany the latter’s cousin, James Guthrie of Stirling, to the scaffold — Cromwell’s ‘short man who could not bow.’

There could have been little in the Traill household to conduce to boredom in these early years. The Civil War witnessed the elder Traill as a chaplain in the Scottish army in England, in which capacity he was present at the Battle of Marston Moor. He visited the Marquis of Montrose in prison. Still later, as the current of events ran its ironic course, the elder Traill was one of that party of honest men sent to remind Charles II at the Restoration of his obligation to keep the Covenant. For this good service he was exiled.

With the head of her home banished to Holland, Mrs Traill, nee Jean Annand, was left to care for the children alone. In 1666 the agents of the prelatical party discovered copies of a proscribed book, An Apologetic Relation, in their home and the whole family was compelled to lie low for some time. The crisis, which culminated at the Pentland Rising, in the course of time affected the younger Robert Traill in common with others of his persuasion. Accused of having taken up arms with the insurgents he was compelled to flee to Holland in 1667 to join his father and the whole bright galaxy of British divines sheltering from the storm of Stuart Absolutism, Here he continued his theological studies and helped Nethenius, Professor of Divinity at Utrecht to prepare for the press Samuel Rutherford‘s Examination of Arminianism.

The younger Traill returned to Britain not long after, for we find him preaching in London in April 1669, now evidently ordained by Presbyterian ministers of that metropolis. For a while he ministered in the Presbyterian church at Cranbrook, Kent. But more trouble was in store for him.

In spite of the stringent laws in force against conventicles, he preached privately in Edinburgh, when on a visit there, in 1677. Summarily arrested and brought before the Privy Council, he was condemned to the Bass Rock, partly for having conversed with John Welsh of Irongray on the English border. Confined in the dark squalor of the Bass dungeon he met such distinguished prisoners as Fraser of Brea and Alexander Peden. Mercifully, however, his term of confinement lasted only till October of the same year, and on his release he returned to his flock at Cranbrook. After a few years he migrated to a Scottish church in London where he remained till his death in May 1716, aged seventy-four.

Even in his last years, however, there was no cessation of conflict to be granted him. In Non-Conformist circles the winds of change were blowing. Christ’s cause, safeguarded externally after the Glorious Revolution, became now the subject of attack from within. In 1691 the republication of Tobias Crisp’s works accelerated a controversy which finally rent asunder the English Non-Conformist movement. Debate raged hotly round the cardinal doctrine of the very Reformation itself, the doctrine of Justification by faith alone.

It is not necessary to enter into the details of this controversy except to state that, owing to a decline in French theological purity and to Baxterian influence, the older Protestant conception of Justification was in danger of serious distortion. A new view of faith was gaining ground which, in the hands of some Baxterians, was little distinguishable from downright morality. At the same time the orthodox doctrine of Justification was charged with leading to Antinomianism. From this Aeolus’ bog of confusion were very soon to blow those chill gusts which would blight many English Dissenters with Hyper-Calvinism and sweep the Scottish Marrowmen into secession.

Robert Traill, now in his ripe years and held in high esteem, felt compelled to take up his pen. Joining ranks with such notable men as Isaac Chauncy, Owen‘s successor, and the younger Thomas Goodwin, he preached and wrote in defence of the doctrine of Justification, vindicating it from the smear of Antinomianism, In 1692 he published a ‘Vindication’ to this end. Six sermons on Galatians 2:21 — a consummately apt text — survive from this time.

To the modern reader it is a matter of interest to find Traill, in this period of controversy, warmly commending Owen’s treatise on Justification and Stephen Marshall’s Gospel Mystery of Sanctification. Traill picked his way between the differentia of Justification and of Sanctification with studied carefulness. Hence two centuries later we find the evangelical Bishop J. C. Ryle quoting extensively from Traill. He evidently felt that Traill’s lucid distinctions between these two major doctrines were salutary medicine for evangelicals of his day, sick from the new teaching of the Holiness Movement led by Pearsall Smith.

Those who come to handle the sermons of Traill will not be long before they realise his stature as an expository preacher. Eschewing all ‘sermon-craft’ as a later age come to conceive it, he knows nothing of that striving for applause or effect which mangles the plain sense of Scripture. He filed off no sharp edges of his text. In tone generally cheerful, on occasion laconically reproachful of his people’s slow progress, Traill pursues the even tenor of his way, striking out in each sermon to left and right with firm, purposeful strokes like some master oarsman rowing his crew to safety. He has no time to waste. It is good, plain, palatable fare in each sermon, and plenty of nourishment for all in the flock.

It is this pastoral faithfulness which makes these sermons of so long ago relevant and fresh as ever today. What congregations enjoyed from Traill in the seventeenth century, what James Hervey enjoyed from him in the eighteenth and Ryle in the nineteenth, we in the twentieth century are likely to enjoy in the same way.

The death of any of God’s saints is a bittersweet occasion. It is a bitter experience to lose from our fellowship those who love Christ. But it is a sweet comfort to know that they are with Christ in glory. This is how many of us now feel when we reflect on the godly life of John J. Murray who was called home to his eternal rest on April 1st of this year. He was 85 years of age.

John Murray was a friend of so many of those who read the books and attended the conferences of the Banner of Truth Trust.

He was born in Lonemore near Dornoch in the Scottish Highlands in September 1934. As a teenager he read Thomas Boston’s Fourfold State and other excellent religious books. He heard a sermon preached in his home area by Professor John Murray of America in 1953 on John 6:37. The effect was that John J.’s life was changed. He now saw the centrality of the doctrine of God’s sovereignty, and the glory of Christ’s death on the cross.

He moved to Edinburgh in 1955 to work for Caledonian Insurance. But his heart was set on promoting the gospel. In 1955 he started a small magazine with the title of Eternal Truth to call people back to the old truths that were once so loved in Scotland. One of those who saw it was Iain Murray, who in 1955 had started the Banner of Truth magazine in Oxford. As a result Iain Murray invited John J. Murray to London to help with the work of the Banner of Truth in a letter in 1960.

John J. found digs in the Foreign Missions Club and joined the Free Church in London. He attended Westminster Chapel on Friday evenings and was greatly influenced by Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones as he preached through Romans.

In 1960 he preached his first sermon in the Free Church of Scotland in London. His text was Hosea 9:8-9. This text reflected John Murray’s zeal for repentance and a return to Reformation preaching. In 1962 he was made an elder in the London Free Church. This gave him the opportunity to invite the Rev. Kenneth MacRae of Stornoway, whom he so much admired, to preach in London.

In 1966 he married Cynthia MacPhee, from Fort William who was working as a nanny in London. They had three children, two girls and a boy. After studies for the ministry, in 1978 John J. was inducted as minister to the Free Church in Oban, on the west coast of Scotland. His young ministry was overshadowed by the death of his oldest daughter Lynda of a brain tumour in December 1980. Ten years later he wrote a booklet called Behind a Frowning Providence. This was widely appreciated and read.

In 1989 he was called to the ministry of the St. Columba’s Free Church of Scotland in Edinburgh. These years were difficult times in the Free Church denomination. There was a serious concern which led to the denomination dividing into two: Free Church and Free Church (Continuing). John J. Murray adhered to the FCC, where he preached until retirement in 2002. On retirement he moved to Glasgow where he was still busy with preaching and writing booklets. One of these books , Catch the Vision, published in 2007 by EP was in many ways his seminal work and it recorded his conviction that the zeal for reformed theology and books in the 1960’s did not convert into a lasting reformation and revival. His zeal to promote godliness took him abroad on many occasions to preach the gospel.

In October 2019 the family had the sad experience of losing their second daughter Anna, who contracted pancreatic cancer in February 2018. All who knew him and his family were aware that he, as a father, was now deeply grieved. But he did all he could to serve Christ still, even though he struggled with depression to the end of his life after the death of his daughter. Thankfully he had the comfort of his beloved wife and dear son Andrew, who has written of his father on his blog Ragged Theology.

I am deeply grateful to John J. Murray. I first met him in the early 1960s when he was preaching at the Free Church of Scotland in London and he remained a friend, colleague and example until the Lord took him to glory.

May the Lord bless to us the theology for which John J. Murray stood. May his prayers be answered that our churches be revived and Reformed, so that in all things God may be glorified and our precious nation be blessed.

Sharon James, Social Policy Analyst for the Christian Institute, whose Father Erroll Hulse was a close friend of John J., has written:

John J. Murray’s long and faithful ministry, was characterised by a robust God-centred theology, warm devotion to Christ and a tender concern for others.

Back in the 1960s during the early days of the Banner of Truth Trust, he was part of a young team who were united in a passionate concern to get solid biblical truth out as widely as possible. That passion for the glory of God, the building up of the church, and the extension of the kingdom to all nations never left him.

‘Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord. They rest from their labours and their works do follow them’.

Following the most recent government advice of 16 March, we have made a decision to cancel both the Youth and the Ministers’ Conferences.

We are saddened that we should have to take this action, but believe that in light of the current circumstances it is the right thing to do.

We will be ensuring that anyone who has booked will receive a full refund of their fees, and we would ask for your patience as we process refunds. There is no need to contact us to request this.

PSALM 46
God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

I met Dick  in September 1961 when he took part in the opening exercises in Philadelphia of Westminster Theological Seminary’s academic year.  He prayed for the almost 300 students who were  the sum total of the student body at that time. He had driven there from his first congregation, Sixth Reformed Church in Paterson New Jersey.

John Richard de Witt was the son of Gary and Elizabeth Petranella Van Vliet de Witt. A son of the manse, he had a strong Dutch heritage. He graduated from Hope College Michigan with the B.A. degree and from Western Theological Seminary with the B.D. degree. He earned the Th. D. degree from the John Calvin Academy of the Theological University of the Reformed Churches in Kampen, the Netherlands, serving as an academic assistant while being a student there. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Rhodes College.

After his years in New Jersey he became assistant minister of Grove Chapel, Camberwell, in London, England, in 1967-69, and so began his lifelong friendship with Iain Murray which engendered  a vast warm personal correspondence between the two leaders.

He served as pastor of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, Kingstree, S.C., in 1970-75 and as professor of church history and then of systematic theology at Reformed Seminary in Jackson in 1975 – 82. He was senior minister of Second Presbyterian Church, Memphis, Tenn., in 1983-93, and senior minister of the Seventh Reformed Church of Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1993-2000. He was installed as senior minister of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C., on Feb. 25, 2001 where he served until his retirement in 2005 and where he was followed by Sinclair Ferguson and Derek Thomas. He remained on in the church and taught the men’s class in the Sunday School. He was a trustee of the Banner of Truth Trust and an associate editor of the Banner of Truth.

Dick was the author of Jus Divinum: The Westminster Assembly and the Divine Right of Church Government; Amazing Love; and a fine booklet, What ls the Reformed Faith? He translated Paul: An Outline of His Theology by Herman N. Ridderbos who was his uncle and prepared Truth’s Victory Over Error for publication. Dr. de Witt was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Jane Epps. His funeral service was led by Dr. Derek Thomas.

Have you ever read Charles Spurgeon for yourself? Maybe you have read about him, or heard about him in a sermon, but have never delved into his writings. Or perhaps you are well acquainted with the writings of Spurgeon, but it has been a while since you last read one of his books. Are you unsure if reading Spurgeon is for you? Have a look below at the testimonials we have received from Banner e-newsletter subscribers, on how the writings and life of Spurgeon changed their lives.

Testimonial from Ron Wood:

Although this is not the same thing as reading Spurgeon himself, Iain Murray’s biography, The Forgotten Spurgeon turned my theological world upside down (or right side up, depending on how you look at it). I had always loved Spurgeon’s evangelistic fervor but when I understood the theology that ignited that fervor, it revolutionized my understanding of Scripture. Additionally, seeing all the attacks that Spurgeon received from those within the church due to his theological position and how he graciously yet firmly responded was a great encouragement to a younger pastor like myself. One of my earthly heroes for sure.

Testimonial from Michael A. Logsdon

Charles Spurgeon was the man God used to reshape and refuel my affection for the gospel. I went through a period of fasting from contemporary celebrity mega-pastors by devoting myself to reading at least one Spurgeon sermon a day for a year. The reservoir of gospel thoughts and illustrations continue to enrich my own preaching even now. What’s more, Spurgeon quotes, when they are shared, still inspire God’s people to erupt in a chorus of “Amen!” I have shared countless times his simple, laser-focused story of preaching election to a group of Methodists until they cried hallelujah over it and still it results in transformed minds and hearts. I praise God for Spurgeon’s faith and devotion to the gospel. Oh, how God has spoken to me through his submitted and humble vessel.

Testimonial from Jen David

To share Spurgeon with others is such an incredible opportunity. I’ve been an avid Spurgeon reader since I was 12. Over the years I’ve given away many copies of Morning and Evening, finding it my absolute favorite book. Trying to pick one quote is difficult, but it would have to be this: ‘It is not thy hold of Christ that saves thee, it is Christ.’ His emphasis on the sovereign power of God to save, sanctify, and keep us is something we all should remind ourselves of daily. The way he writes brings such conviction of truth and points directly to Christ. One cannot read Spurgeon without seeing The One who gave him hope and the desire to share Him with the world. We all can benefit and be challenged by his powerful writing.

Testimonial from Brett Kruschke

As many do, I consider Spurgeon my favorite old-time preacher. He seems to have the best grasp of God and his immutable traits as anyone I’ve listened to, and he has such a great way of relating God’s Word to his fellow man in such a colorful and convicting way. He has been a great blessing to my faith and he’s among those I most look forward to meeting someday in heaven.

Testimonial from Zachary Anderson

I began reading C.H. Spurgeon while I was in college. At that young age, I was an Arminian and an avid evangelist in the town where I went to college. I found the writings of Spurgeon to help me tremendously — to know how to express the truths of the gospel. About that same time I began to study doctrinal issues related to God’s sovereignty and our salvation. I soon discovered that Mr. Spurgeon was a strong Calvinist. His love for the lost and eagerness to convey the truth found in the death of Christ helped me to navigate some very difficult waters. And my seminary years were filled with encouragement as I read commentaries and sermons by Spurgeon. Learning to preach with the help of Spurgeon’s book, Lectures to My Students, kept me from succumbing to the desire of congregations to hear watered down and moralistic sermons.

In my first years as a pastor, I continued to read Spurgeon’s writings. I had two different sets of his sermons at that time, both were five volumes. I read him very regularly. We saw many conversions in the congregations we served and I would say that was chiefly due to an emphasis on preaching faith and repentance — recognizing, as Spurgeon did, that even people who congregate with us are not necessarily converted.

Later in my ministry I was able to purchase the entire set, some 67 or 68 volumes of his sermons. I used to begin my day by reading a sermon from one of them. I was on a pace to read through all the volumes in 11 years (4-5 per week) when we were called to serve as missionaries to Mexico. Alas, I had to sell the set! I still read him almost every week.

I had an electronic version of his sermons at that time, before coming to Mexico, which gave me the ability to search topics and ideas. I found it fascinating to study a topic and find out where and how Spurgeon used a particular idea in his sermons — a study that would benefit any pastor. Doing this study, you will see both tremendous insights of his, as well as references that don’t fit his messages, showing us he was but a man too.

Testimonial from R. Kent Blessing

In his Morning by Morning and Evening by Evening devotional compilations, I have found a sure and sturdy resource that consistently brings me back to center…which is only, truly, found at the cross of Christ. As a layman, who wants to faithfully serve the Lord in His local church as a servant, teacher and leader, I am most grateful to Mr. Spurgeon’s ability to ‘personalize’ the gospel without compromising its universalism — it isn’t really about me, it’s about the glory of God. And, I thank Mr. Spurgeon for constantly reminding me of that fact and bringing me back together with Christ.

Testimonial from Teryl Keohane

My introduction to Spurgeon was through the bibliographies of John MacArthur’s books. After poking around on the internet I discovered the ‘Spurgeon Archive’ and ‘Spurgeon Gems’ and began printing reams of his sermons and writings. Spurgeon speaks to every man, high and low, rich and poor, saved and lost. Many of his words I have noted in my favorite Bible and I turn to his teachings time and time again.

I would soundly recommend EVERY Christian read through All of Grace at least once per year because it helps to keep one on track and humble. I would also recommend A Defence of Calvinism, not only for the message but also for his statement on the pre-eminence of our Lord.

Spurgeon has a preaching/teaching style that, at once, draws the listener (reader) into the subject matter and makes one think. He illustrates his messages with the best and worst of those daily occurrences that befall all of us, helping to diagnose our ills and offering the only solution that can heal our wounded souls and strengthen us for another bout of all of life. He brings faith into practice where the rubber meets the road and ALWAYS points to Him who died and who intercedes for us.

Every time I read Spurgeon I have a revival inside.

My last Spurgeon read was Hatred Without Cause. I’ve read through it twice wondering at the animosity towards Christ AND His followers. For the Christian as well as the non-believer it presents the ultimate case for our Lord’s perfections, mannerisms, words, compassion, mercy and grace. It’s a grand essay on the fact that there is absolutely no reason to reject Christ save that we are simply and inherently evil. This sermon really sets me meditating on the reasons we have for rejecting Christ. There aren’t any and I am currently working this into my gospel presentation.

Please read Spurgeon. His writings explain many hard truths, why they are hard, how we can understand them and how the bible ‘fits’ different teachings from the OT and NT together to pierce our hearts and draw us into worship.

My ‘take home’ from Spurgeon is ‘flee despair’ and that from a man who knew.

Testimonial from Rebecca Goings

God has used Spurgeon’s writings in my life in a powerful way. I don’t remember how I was introduced to him, but his words captivated me from the first. As a writer myself, I couldn’t help but stand in awe of Spurgeon’s elevated prose, and I knew that through his words, God was showing me how He uses a sanctified pen for His glory.

I devoured many books and countless sermons, and it was at Spurgeon’s own recommendation from yesteryear that I first began to read the Puritans. It is through his zeal for Christ that I came to learn and believe in the doctrines of grace. It is by reading his decadent words that God has taught me a high view of Himself, that Christ is altogether lovely, that there is none beside Him, that He alone outshines all other glories.

Through Spurgeon’s high view of God, I came to understand the same, and began more voraciously reading and studying my Bible. I pursued a greater love for Christ, and hid long and often in my prayer closet. I believe God has used Spurgeon, both yesterday and today, as a testimony of what His grace can do in a sold-out heart. My own Christian life has been greatly inspired by Spurgeon’s deep love for Christ. He lifted up the beauty of Christ in such a way as I had never seen Him before. The blazing fire in Spurgeon’s heart, even now as I read him, continues to stoke the tiny flame in mine, all to the glory of God.

Testimonial from Keith Keyser

For about 6 years I have been systematically reading through Spurgeon’s sermons (I’m now working through Volume 17.) I also have extensively used his Morning & Evening devotional and his Treasury of David (commentary on the Psalms.) My soul has been greatly refreshed by his Christocentricity. His preaching clearly flowed out of his love for the Savior and much precious time spent at our Lord’s feet. I’ve also appreciated his high commitment to Scripture rather than dogma according to human tradition. While he’s well-read in the Reformers, Puritans, and other giants of Christian history, he’s not a slave to their opinions. Like a good Berian, if he found it in the Scripture, he added a hearty amen and used it. Lastly, I’ve deeply appreciated his incorporation of rich Christian hymnody. His quotations are varied among many different authors and theological fields of thought. Yet the lyrics he chooses appropriately illustrate the points that he’s making in his sermons. In short, Spurgeon was a tremendous gift to the Church and his writings continue to address the same issues that we face in the 21st century, namely God’s greatness and glory, His wonderful saving work, His plan for the ages, and the need for people to repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. I heartily commend his works to any serious minded believer or to anyone who is seriously seeking the Savior.

Testimonial from David Ledgerwood

Forty years ago, my wife purchased the three-volume set of Treasury of David for my 25th birthday. Several years ago, I began reading it each day as part of my private devotions, copying each verse, and then underlining and copying Spurgeon’s comments that especially resonate. I am currently on Psalm 108 and have 111 pages of notes. What a rich treasure! Since I am a musician by profession, I also copy Spurgeon’s comments related to music in a separate file. I only regret that I waited as long as I did to spend extended time with this man of God. I have been enriched and challenged by his words, and heartily recommend him to others.

Testimony from Stefanie and Chris

We have been so very blessed by spending time reading devotionals and sermons by C.H. Spurgeon – his love for the Lord, the Word and the Church shine so brilliantly through his words… it’s impossible not to be swept up in his adoration!

Testimonial from Rick Jones

I try to read as much of Spurgeon as I can, at least one sermon a week, and have read his Autobiography, and many other books (which I get from The Banner), as often as I can, when I can get them. I use his notes for messages and Sunday School lessons, I pray that one day the church would see the need to return to Spurgeon’s style and power of preaching. If we only had a Spurgeon for our time now. I recommend anything of Spurgeon’s and most about him for reading.

Testimonial from William L. Krewson

Reading about Spurgeon from his contemporaries or reading Spurgeon himself, these two habits have encouraged my heart and deepened my love for the gospel for my forty years of ministry. Spurgeon’s profound use of language blended with his theological convictions produce a tonic for the soul. I prefer to alternate between Spurgeon’s own pen and various biographies of the preacher. His Autobiography is priceless for his wit, his wisdom, and his profound gratitude to our sovereign God. What a gift to the church of Jesus Christ was this man whose life was directed solely to the glory of God.

Testimonial from Traci Hinkle

I had hit a wall in my late twenties. At that time I had two very young girls, and motherhood had completely destroyed me. My marriage left me disenchanted, and everyday I was disappointed in my performance in both roles. I knew the answer was always God. My Christian walk began in third grade, so of course I knew where to turn, but I could not manufacture any measure of tenderness, patience or maturity. The guilt that I lived with stole my joy, and my inability to spontaneously produce fruit grieved me. My ‘quiet’ time was deficient. That was my fault too. I was on my last attempt to get it right. My 15-20 minutes of quiet time (which was usually interrupted) was full of topical lessons, regurgitated scripture that had been poorly digested by someone else, and principles that were extracted from scripture that I didn’t know or love. I spent my time searching for Him out of duty and felt punished. It must not be good enough if I’m still a wretched person. It all came to a head one morning when my heart deflated yet again, because I couldn’t generate the feelings no matter how many principles I broke myself on. They wouldn’t stick. I thought ‘I could walk away from this. This isn’t appealing.’

I praise God that he left me utterly unsatisfied by these means of seeking Him. I was fed up and He was so good to guide me to that. I picked up Spurgeon soon after this. I thought if everyone is going to quote this guy, I’m going to forsake all floral devotionals and all topical instruction and read him. The first sermon I stumbled on was given in 1890, Inexcusable Irreverence and Ingratitude. I’ll never forget the title. The scripture reference is Romans 1:20-21, ‘They are without excuse: because that, when they knew God they glorified Him not as God, neither were they thankful.’

You cannot read this sermon without running into Spurgeon’s palpable love for the man and savior Jesus Christ. I was broken on sentences like ‘If God is anything, we ought to make Him everything’, ‘God is infinitely glorious and unless we treat Him as such, we have not treated Him as he ought to be treated’, ‘Weep over your sin: now you have glorified him as God. Fall on your face and be nothing before the Most High: now you have glorified Him as God. Accept his righteousness; adore His bleeding Son; trust in his infinite compassion. Now you have glorified Him as God.’ I had never, not once, ever adored Him, and I knew it. The cross was in the background for years as I’d tinkered with my life. Always trying to act better. I’m so sad for the woman that I was. Spurgeon began a journey of seeking the God of the Bible. I’m 31 and I have spent the past few years pursuing my Glorious Savior who first pursued me. I’m staunch in my studies. I do not read what is not worthy of the precious little time I have. I’m still a novice, but I love Him much better. Spurgeon’s adoration and reverence revealed to me that what I was tasting was not the Lord. How valuable is that? When I thought I had Him, I had a very low view. When I found out that I didn’t, I had to look up. He increases in my view every single day. I love every word of scripture. I reject anyone who leads others in stopping short of an ever increasing view of the Most High. My journey has been time spent blowing past every errant thought I possessed and glorifying Him for all that He is and all that I can’t comprehend. It hurts to know I found my Master unappealing. He is irresistible. He. Is. Everything.

So to have a catalyst such as Charles Spurgeon to take me from ‘I could walk away from this’ to ‘I cannot move outside of this’ has left me a major fan of his.

Testimonial from Gerald White

The first I read of Charles Spurgeon was his devotional work, Morning and Evening. My father gave this book to me at a time of deep depression whilst I was serving the Lord in ministry.

The way Spurgeon wrote was a balm to my soul. He consistently pointed me back to Jesus and applied God’s truth and His promises to this pilgrim’s heart.

Spurgeon has been the best mentor a young pastor/church planter could ever wish for. Reading his Lectures To My Students and Autobiography has shown me that he was not just a good wordsmith, but was a serious, compassionate and godly man.

For any wishing to be greatly encouraged, then look no further than this man’s works; a man who stood on the truth and let the truth stand.

Testimonial from Stephen LaSpina

I can think of few other writers who have encouraged me in the Christian life like Charles Haddon Spurgeon has. His writings turn us to high views of God and ground us in Biblical truth. If you’re looking for a place to start being exposed to Spurgeon, I would highly recommend reading his classic devotional Morning and Evening. You will find your soul blessed for it.

Testimonial from Frank Cone

I’m presently preaching through the book of Psalms on Sunday evenings. Although I’ve read Spurgeon sermons for most of my ministry, reading The Treasury of David has meant more to me than I could have imagined. The exposition and choice contributions that apparently were meaningful to Spurgeon would greatly benefit any believer whether preaching the Psalms or not.

Testimonial from Jane Parrish

I choose one Puritan or other solid teacher of times past to read for each year, and this year I chose Spurgeon. I have read almost all of his Autobiography, and the impact of these accounts of his life on mine are faith building. Spurgeon’s love for God and exaltation of Christ pictures for me the life of God lived out — in the pursuit of Christ, His glory; the sanctification of all of life. I have read All of Grace, According to Promise, The Forgotten Spurgeon, The Soul Winner, How to Lead Sinners to the Savior, Sermons in Candles, Lectures to My Students. I will be reading other volumes to finish the year and will read his sermons next year. Spurgeon will get 2 focused years of reading! I am thankful to be able to enjoy these books; may they be used by God to shape me more into the image of Christ. I’ve been amazed how nothing is new under the sun. Our battles….are right there on the pages I read, and that helps me to think clearly about my times and my God in these times.

‘Short and engaging little books that offer real spiritual meat, but are accessibly written for the modern reader.’

The Banner of Truth is excited to introduce a new series on the Christian Faith: Banner Mini-Guides.

The series is divided into five sections: Key Truths, Christian History, Christian Living, the Christian Mind, and Christian Mission. Each title will provide an outline of the subject in simple, easy to understand, terms. Enough information is provided to enlarge your understanding of the theme, but with the goal of whetting your appetite and encouraging you to explore the subject in more detail. Suggestions for further reading are included in each book.

Our hope is that new believers will be helped by these simple introductions to different aspects of the Christian faith, while more mature believers will find them helpful reminders and summaries of the important truths which guide their Christian lives.

Each book is deliberately kept around 100 pages long in the hope that even people who are not regular readers would find them accessible. They are also very affordable, retailing at $8, and so could be used as gifts to encourage people to read. We hope too that churches will want to use them in group studies, or as the basis for Sunday school or Bible class lessons, and to help with this, each book is divided into 13 chapters to fit with teaching quarters.

To begin the series, we are releasing 4 new volumes, which you can see here.

John Hurrion was born in Suffolk, circa 1675, in a period when those who had stood apart from the Church of England after the Act of Uniformity of 1662 were undergoing persecution. Almost the only knowledge we have of his youth is this statement: ‘In his younger years, he was brought to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.’1 In this his maternal grandfather, Edmund Whincop (1616–87), may well have played a part. After being silenced at Layston in 1662, Whincop’s troubles included a five-month imprisonment, before he was called to serve a Nonconformist congregation at Watesfield in 1677. His grandson was only twelve when he died, but the fact that John Hurrion was to marry Jane Baker, daughter of a family of the Watesfield church, indicates an ongoing connexion with that congregation. The marriage took place in 1696, soon after Hurrion’s settlement in a church at Denton, Norfolk, where his predecessor, William Bidbank, had served since 1662.

That Hurrion was set apart for the gospel ministry about the age of twenty-one, confirms a tradition of his early studiousness. Under what conditions his training for the ministry had proceeded are not recorded, save that it was ‘partly under Mr Robinson of Walpole, Suffolk’. That he was committed to hard study is certain, and his library was by no means confined to the Puritan period. We are told that one of the authors whom he held in ‘particular esteem’ was Chrysostom of Constantinople. He was to become, in the opinion of his friend and contemporary, Abraham Taylor, ‘As judicious and accomplished a Divine as any that appeared in his age.’ That this was not study for study’s sake is clear from the influence of his ministry at Denton. From a weak condition at the time of his settlement, the work ‘by the blessing of God upon his labours was brought into a very flourishing state. His great abilities gained him also a large share in the affections and esteem of several other churches in that and the neighbouring counties.’

By the 1690s, evangelical churches in the Nonconformist tradition were facing new dangers. While ‘the Glorious Revolution’ of 1688 had ended physical persecution, the Nonconformist churches (termed ‘Dissenters’ by members of the Church of England) were beginning to form denominations, only to have their unity threatened from another direction as the former biblical orthodoxy came to be challenged.

In Suffolk the rise of anti-trinitarian belief had an advocate in William Manning, said to have influenced the Presbyterian, Thomas Emlyn, who became, possibly, the first Nonconformist to declare himself a Unitarian. At some point after Hurrion’s settlement at Denton, Manning made strong attempts to win him over, thinking ‘he would be a considerable gain to his party’. His endeavours had the opposite effect. After giving much attention to the subject, Hurrion’s whole ministry was to be characterized by emphasis on the deity of Christ and the Holy Spirit. It was his later counsel that, ‘whether the Trinity was opposed or no, young divines could not take a better way to fit themselves for public service, than to be rooted and grounded in that important doctrine’.

In the 1690s, anti-trinitarian belief had no spokesmen among the Nonconformist churches in London. That development was to await the next century, but the unity of these churches was already disrupted in that decade by a different deviation, more evangelical in its form, and strengthened by the advocacy of Richard Baxter. A general esteem for Baxter was based on the value of his well-known practical writing, most notably, The Saints’ Everlasting Rest (1649) and The Reformed Pastor (1656). But in his understanding of redemption Baxter also wrote titles which departed significantly from the understanding of redemption as contained in the Westminster, Savoy and Baptist Confessions.2 His position (largely derived from Amyraut and other writers) is succinctly stated by Isaac Ambrose in the words, ‘Christ died not to bring all or any man actually to salvation, but to purchase salvability and reconciliation so far, as that God might and would (salva justitia) deal with them on terms of a better covenant.’3 The one ‘condition’ now to be fulfilled was ‘faith’. The ‘new covenant’, Baxter wrote, ‘is a general gift or act of oblivion, or pardon, given freely to all mankind, on condition they will believe and consent to it’.4

Christ’s work of redemption, Baxter taught, is ‘the beginning of your justification’. So God ‘requireth no actual obedience, as the condition of our begun justification’, that being done already for all people. But for justification in its entirety, he ‘doth require both the continuance of faith, and actual sincere obedience, as the condition of continuing, or not losing, our justification’.5

In opposition to this belief, he names as ‘error’ the statement: ‘Christ did both perfectly obey, and also make satisfaction for sin by suffering, in the person of all the elect … so that his righteousness of obedience … is so imputed to us, as if we ourselves had done it, and suffered it … .’6 Baxter wrote on this teaching at various points in his life but dispute came to a head around the time of his death in London in 1691. At this date the Nonconformist leaders in London—both those of Presbyterian and those of Congregational persuasion—had been drawing together in a Plan of Union, and were sharing in speaking at the Pinners’ Hall lectures, an institution established by Puritan merchants in 1672. But as Baxter’s teaching resurfaced, serious controversy ensued which ended the Union and the presence of Presbyterians at Pinners’ Hall. Sympathy for an allowance of Baxter’s views was chiefly, but not entirely, among Presbyterians, while Congregationalists wrote in opposition. Criticism centred on two points: (1) This was a view of justification which saw it no longer as ‘an act of God’s free grace’ (Shorter Catechism) but as a process in which faith was to be regarded as a continuing element. (2) Baxter’s teaching on justification resulted from a different understanding of the atonement. The confessional belief was that Christ, for those with whom he was united by the Father’s gift, rendered obedience and suffered condemnation in their place. Those whose sin was imputed to Christ, are the same persons to whom his righteousness is imputed (Rom. 4:25; 5:10). Baxter denied, as in the words above, any such correlation.

Opponents of the new teaching in the 1690s were apprehensive that its influence would be extensive, and the first thirty years of the eighteenth century justified their concern. In Scotland, a growing number of men, who followed Baxter, got the name of ‘Neonomians’ (‘new-law’ keepers). In the words of John Macleod, ‘The righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ was set aside as the ground of acceptance; and our new life as believers and penitents was looked upon as so much of the ground on which our acceptance is built.’7 In Wales there was no such early acceptance. Howell Harris wrote: ‘I think we all agree with the good old Reformers and Puritans; I hold their works in great esteem. We do not think the Baxterian scheme orthodox.’8

By contrast, in England the idea that Christ’s death did not secure the justification of all for whom he suffered gained widespread popularity, coalescing with Arminian belief. The contemporary rise of anti-trinitarian belief, and growing rejection of Scripture as divine revelation, meant that a general decline of evangelical belief was in progress when Hurrion’s material, reprinted in these pages, was published in 1732. It constituted four chapters in a larger volume, A Defence of Some Important Doctrines of the Gospel: Preached at the Lime Street Lecture. In a Preface it was said,

As error never raged with greater violence than it does in our unhappy times, and as lukewarmness never discovered itself more than in the present day of darkness, it never could be more expedient than now to plead for the glorious gospel of the blessed God.9

There is only a minimum of information on Hurrion’s life between his settlement in Norfolk in 1696 and his writing of these pages. His ministry at Denton continued through  twenty-eight years, reported as ‘very successful, and he was esteemed a great blessing by all the Dissenters, in those parts’. In 1724 he was faced with the difficult decision of a call to the church at Hare Court, Aldersgate Street, London. He considered the prospect of wider usefulness, and he had concern lest declining the call would result in a division of the congregation.10 On the other hand, he had no prevailing desire to remove. The call was accepted but the outcome was not altogether happy. Perhaps a division in the congregation existed and continued. A ‘coolness’ of some towards him, contrasted with his previous popularity, and a decline in his health hindered his activity in pastoral visiting.

On the wider scene, Hurrion’s ability was recognized by his appointment as one of the lecturers at Pinners’ Hall where he preached for the first time on June 11, 1726. Sixteen sermons which he preached there, on The Proper Divinity and Extraordinary Works of the Holy Spirit, were published posthumously in 1734. In 1730 London merchants, concerned over the general situation, initiated another lecture series and Hurrion was one of the eight ministers chosen to take part. Convened at Lime Street, London, these lectures started on November 12, 1730, and continued weekly to April 8, 1731. The subject assigned to him was ‘The Scripture Doctrine of Particular Redemption’, on which he was due to speak on four occasions. Ill health, however, prevented him from speaking again after he had preached twice. A publication of the Lime Street lectures was being prepared by Abraham Taylor and Hurrion endeavoured to help him. On December 14, 1731, his health seriously failing, he wrote to Taylor: ‘I have now finished, and now send you, my third sermon: I shall go on with the fourth as fast as I can; if possible, I would finish it next week, but I fear I shall not be able, I have been so much worse since I wrote you last.’

Hurrion’s anticipation was correct, he got no further than leaving notes of the fourth sermon, on which, Taylor said, ‘I have not made any alterations.’ But he must have augmented them for publication. It tells us much of the man that, at the very end of life, he gave his last energies to a subject on which he felt deeply. ‘The delight he took in his subject’, Taylor commented, ‘carried him above his great pain and weakness.’ He was ‘an eminent saint’, and, in dying, confessed: ‘The death of Christ being the fountain of our life, there is nothing more necessary, pleasant, or useful to the Christian, than a right apprehension and remembrance of it.’ John Hurrion died on December 31, 1731, in his fifty-sixth year.

The whole of the lectures as published were orientated towards the need for reformation and revival in the churches. Unknown to the authors in 1732—the year their volume was published—an instrument was in preparation by whom the doctrine Hurrion defended would spring into greater public attention. George Whitefield matriculated at Pembroke College, Oxford, in November 1732. About three years later, he wrote: ‘God was pleased to enlighten, and bring me into the knowledge of his free grace, and the necessity of being justified in his sight by faith alone.’ He was on a course which would lead him to challenge his friend, John Wesley, with the question, ‘How can all be universally redeemed if all are not finally saved? You plainly make salvation depend not on
God’s free grace, but on man’s free will.’11

It is remarkable that the re-emergence of Puritan belief came within the Church of England where the authors of that school had been so long discredited. Whitefield openly owned their writings. William Grimshaw came to the doctrine of justification through the reading of John Owen, and James Hervey, disagreeing with John Wesley on that doctrine, drew attention to the Important Doctrines of the Gospel: Preached at the Lime Street Lecture, 1732, which, he says, on final perseverance and the imputed righteousness of Christ, gave him the ‘fullest view which I ever remember to have met with in any of our English writers’.12 Hervey was not to be the last to draw attention to the influence of the 1732 volume which was in its eighth edition by 1824. In its main lines, Wesley’s thinking was close to Baxter’s, and when Baxter’s teaching on redemption was gaining influence in Wales in the nineteenth century, it was Hurrion’s sermons on Particular Redemption which were translated into Welsh and published in 1820, with a Preface by John Elias. Elias, the evangelical leader in North Wales, regretted they had not been published earlier:

These sermons were highly prized by the defenders and lovers of the truth in London for scores of years, but were hidden from monoglot Welshmen until the present year. There has been, and still is, great anger in the world against the Doctrines of Grace.13

At times controversy over universal redemption has sometimes been diverted from Scripture by criticism of the advocates or opponents of the teaching. It is a merit of Hurrion’s exposition in these pages that personalities do not figure in his treatment. About to enter eternity, he was occupied with a higher concern. Nor did he question the Christian standing of all with whom he disagreed. He knew that controversy about grace which lacks grace is destructive. Although there is clearer light with some Christians than with others, humility becomes all for ‘if any man think that he knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know’ (1 Cor. 8:2). Whitefield was of that spirit when he noted ‘Baxter’s Call to the Unconverted’ among the books which ‘much benefited me’, adding, ‘as soon as the love of God was shed abroad in my soul, I loved all of whatsoever denomination, who loved the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity of heart’.14 Where devotion to Christ is uppermost brotherly love can be maintained even when believers disagree.

Certainly diligence in contending for the faith is never to be suspended, and these pages are reprinted in the prayerful hope of a greater recovery of biblical truth today.

I attended the funeral service of Erroll Hulse, which took place 18 days after his death, in Cuckfield on Monday 21 August. Cuckfield was the place that, for me, Erroll put on the map. The fulsome, written tributes to him from Tom Nettles (USA) and Conrad Mbewe (Zambia) that I enjoyed reading immensely, and the prospect of meeting so many old friends, as well as my own very great admiration for our late brother, made the occasion unmissable. I was not disappointed.

I gave myself plenty of time to get there as holdups on the London ring road, the M25, can be most frustrating.

Cuckfield is a beautiful village, full of old buildings and million-pound houses in the ‘stockbroker-belt’ of Sussex. Erroll had gone to the tiny Zion Strict Baptist Church, which was located up a little lane in the heart of the village, in the 1950s. There he instantly formed a mutually respectful and loving relationship with the church officer, Stanley Hogwood, and together they began transforming the Cuckfield witness. Erroll saw the potential and Stanley caught the vision, and the work flourished under their leadership.

About 200 of us gathered in the new building. The old meeting place was sold and is being redeveloped into a four-bedroom house. The new meeting place, which opened a year or so ago, is large, airy and light, but suffers from poor acoustics. Erroll’s coffin was brought in and the family sat at the front. The service was joyous and doxological. The hymns, which were sung heartily, were as follows: ‘Great is the Gospel’, ‘Zion, Founded on the Mountain’ (metrical version of Psalm 87), ‘Jesus Shall Reign’, ‘Jesus Thy Blood and Righteousness’, and ‘Christ the Lord Is Risen Today!’ Then, at the graveside, ‘Our God, Our Help in Ages Past’.

Iain Murray read from Psalm 72 (KJV) and spoke of a young couple of South Africans in the early 1950s, 22 and 21 years of age, and how, one evening, Lyn had spoken to Erroll and besought him to take seriously his relationship with God. He recorded that conversation in his diary. From that time on they attended Pretoria Baptist Church twice a Sunday faithfully. There he learned about daily devotions, giving to the church, witnessing to one’s faith, attending the prayer meeting, and the dangers of worldliness. Such things remained constants throughout the whole of their lives. Erroll was a keen athlete, excelling in any sport, coming third in the 440 yards in the South Africa games, a splendid squash player. How delighted he was when his son Neil finally defeated him.

An only child, he graduated from Pretoria University in architecture. He thought he could broaden his future usefulness by working for a while in London, and by also taking some courses under Principal Ernest Kevin at the newly opened London Bible College. Erroll lived for a while in the Foreign Missions Club, London. There he met a fine group of Christian men, who attended Westminster Chapel, and whose only handicap in his eyes was ‘Calvinism’. Erroll went with them to hear the Welsh preacher, Dr Lloyd-Jones (Erroll had been saved under a Welsh evangelist), and he was gripped by what he heard and was forced to examine the Scriptures to see whether these things were so. Many conversations and sermons and the reading of many books all pointed him towards the truth of the Reformed faith. The Commentary on Romans by Robert Haldane also helped him. He was soon drawn into working with the Banner of Truth as business manager, and one day he was invited to the village of Cuckfield and to the almost derelict Zion Chapel.

What happened in Cuckfield was remarkable. Andrew Symonds was attending the chapel when Erroll arrived and he is a member there still. He was the second man to speak at the funeral service. He described the characteristics of the years when Erroll was pastor: systematic expository and evangelistic preaching (something he had learned while at Westminster Chapel); the plurality of elders; door to door visitation on Saturday mornings; the planting of new churches (Austin and Jeremy Walker pastor the Maidenbower church which began as a Cuckfield church-plant); the initiating of conferences such as the Carey Ministers’ Conference (started in 1970 and which I attended); the Whitefield fraternal; a magazine, Reformation Today; a new vital missionary perspective which brought visiting international speakers to Cuckfield; a praying membership who attended the prayer meeting on Saturday nights; a young people’s work – at one time there were 90 teenagers in attendance. Not surprisingly the building soon needed to be lengthened. The field at the end of the lane was purchased for a car park (the land on which the new building was erected), and the house next door to the church was purchased to be the manse. Erroll’s writing ministry developed with booklets, books, and magazines being sent out around the world. In the first ten years the membership of the church grew by 130, many of the new members having been converted from the world.

Along with this activity there were also the usual tensions which also characterized the congregations of the New Testament, regenerate people not being of the same mind in the Lord. Unable to point out moral defects in Erroll’s character, or any theological errors in his teaching, personality issues came to the fore. There were resignations and some tense church meetings. Wherever there is a flock of Christ’s sheep there is a wolf who wants to destroy it.

Kees van Kralingen is the new editor of Reformation Today, and he spoke of his long friendship with Erroll. ‘He combined reformed convictions with great graciousness’, he said. ‘He had an irresistible and inspiring gift of the grace of encouraging.’ The purpose of Reformation Today was to bind together reformed Baptists from all over the world. The latest development has been the African Bible Conferences, 75 of which have met south of the Equator in forty locations. 100,000 books have been distributed.

Neil Hulse, Erroll’s only son (he also had three daughters), spoke of God’s kindness to the family in giving them this father who was prayerful, loving, evangelistic, brilliant and inspiring. He possessed a mischievous sense of humour and he could be scatty at times. But the home was very hospitable. His vision and energy was balanced by Lyn’s sense of reserve. She kept some finances hidden away to protect them from Erroll’s generosity! When Lyn Hulse developed Alzheimers Erroll learned new skills of cooking and housekeeping. He once told me how tough were the last couple of days of his wife’s life in hospital as she struggled for breath. He thought of how she had lived a blameless life for the almost sixty years of their marriage, and now God was allowing this pain to come into her life. It was tough for him, but then after his stroke there were more lessons God had to teach him. Erroll never complained. He was always grateful for visits and ministry. His local church in Leeds cared for him deeply. The staff in the nursing home were very kind.

Erroll’s son-in-law, Bill James, the pastor of the Leamington Spa Evangelical Church and the newly appointed Principal of the London Seminary, preached briefly from Psalm 72. Seed will be sown on mountain tops and there it will grow. Do you see it? In the place where the winds are the fiercest and the soil is most acidic – on the mountain top – there precious seed is sown and there a great crop springs up, a harvest of the seed of Christ’s word. This will live and will abide for ever. Bill once teased his father-in-law concerning Erroll’s first work with the Banner of Truth Trust – ‘Erroll a business manager’? He never considered that managing a business was a prominent gift of Erroll’s. ‘Oh, it was all right,’ replied Erroll, ‘don’t worry. My vocation was to drop packages of books so that they got damaged, and I then could give the books away for free!’

Erroll was a magnet who attracted people from every part of the world, and being drawn into his orbit they were refreshed and renewed. There was not an atom of snobbery or discouragement in his life. The congregation that gathered in Cuckfield for his funeral and then walked half a mile to the cemetery to watch his coffin being lowered into the grave, sang from their hearts of their hope – which was not in any man, not even those as supremely gifted as Erroll Hulse

Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come
Be our defence while life shall last, and our eternal home.

John Calvin’s sermons are very different to his commentaries, they are also as helpful as the day they were delivered.

There are 47 expositions of Genesis 11:5-9 to Genesis 20:4-7, in this latest book, published for the first time in the English language. Those who already have Professor McGregor’s first volume, Genesis 1-11, will want to own a copy of this latest publication. Indeed, those who have read Calvin’s sermons on Deuteronomy and Job (in facsimile) or Leslie Rawlinson’s translation of Calvin’s Ephesians, or Kathy Childress’s work on Galatians, will know the real value of Calvin in the pulpit. He was no ivory-towered theologian but a man fully committed to reform and gospel-preaching in the city of Geneva.

Which Christian does not face a thousand difficulties and more in his pilgrimage through this life? How often are we battling against the world, the flesh, and the devil? We are tempted to pride and need to be humbled often. We need to know that God protects and increases his church. There is the need for obedience, strong faith, and reliance upon our Great God in times of trouble and danger. God is not only a God of grace and comfort, he is also a righteous and just God who sometimes has to judge and punish, bringing us also through the blessings and curses of wealth and poverty. Chastisement is a fruitful lesson to learn.

What could be more relevant than a need to understand God’s mind on sodomy? The need to ‘flee the wrath to come’. How often do we need to flee to Christ as our only Sanctuary and Saviour, our Melchizedek? And then there is justification, beginning with Abraham, set forth in Romans and Galatians, centred in Christ alone. Calvin has four sermons here on justification. Then there are lessons for a Christian of patience, self-sacrifice, the value of a good conscience, of being tested in the life of faith, and the need to copy, or avoid, the faults of others, Sarah and Hagar, in particular, both of whom made bad decisions.

Are we struggling to understand the Covenant of Almighty God, fundamental to our true grasp of God’s call and election? Do we really understand, as we should, the relationship between circumcision and baptism (two sermons)? And what about the struggles and conflicts of Israel and the Arab world today? Ishamel’s primogeniture and Isaac’s election continues to be basic for TV news.

These are a few of the lessons and ways through temptation and sin, to the eternal city, by which we are helped. Calvin is unquestionably ‘a master in Israel’ and a pastor/preacher par excellence, touching us in the 21st century as he warmed and inspired the multitudes in the sixteenth.

And there are the fruit of the Spirit: truth, godly fear, humility, sobriety, as well as the avoidance of gluttony, drunkenness, incest, adultery, prostitution, sexual immorality, intentional and inadvertent sins, as much with us as centuries before the arrival of our Lord Jesus Christ on earth. Nothing more prepares the Christian to be what he is called to be, under God, than exposure to God’s own Word. And John Calvin is among the elite in this respect, preaching the word both in season and out of season, touching on these and other timeless themes.

The scriptural text (King James Version) is given in full at the head of the sermon. The translation-language flows and is easy to follow and assimilate. Each sermon concludes with a prayerful and thoughtful meditation. There is robust application throughout and, for the modern preacher, thought-provoking sermonic material, without necessarily falling into the reformer’s own 16th century style. The material is so readable, any intelligent and spiritually-hungry Christian, should profit immensely from having (and using!) this outstanding and handsomely produced volume. These 900+ pages will furnish mountains of spiritual food for years to come, especially if prayerfully and minutely applied to our own hearts, as we pass through this wicked world, on our way to the Celestial City and to the marriage-feast of the Lamb.

On August 4th,  the family informed us of the passing of Pastor Erroll Hulse in the Wetherby Manor Nursing Home. He had been cared for there recently, after suffering a stroke three and a half years ago.

Erroll was born in South Africa in 1931 and graduated in Architecture at Praetoria University. He was converted under the preaching of  the Welsh Evangelist, Ivor Powell and came, with his wife Lyn, to study at London Bible College as ‘a dogmatic Arminian’.

Through the lectures of Dr E. F. Kevan, the preaching of Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and the friendship of the Rev Iain Murray, he was greatly helped to accept the doctrines of grace. He later acknowledged that ‘it was the reading of the recently published commentary by Robert Haldane on Romans in five volumes (published by Jay Green) that cured me completely of Arminianism. By the end of Romans chapter three I was a firm five point Calvinist.’

With a growing conviction of the need for Reformed books, he joined with Iain Murray in the pioneer work of the Banner of Truth Trust, in 1957, acting as manager. In 1962 he accepted pastoral oversight of Cuckfield Baptist Church, continuing with the Trust until 1967, when he became full-time pastor at Cuckfield. While there he exercised a wide and varied ministry. In 1970 he launched Reformation Today magazine,  serving as editor until 2013. He also organised the Carey Conference which still meets in January each year.

After leaving Cuckfield in 1985, he was Pastor of Belvidere Road Church in Liverpool for three years before joining the pastoral team at Leeds Reformed Baptist Church, in which he served until his illness.

Erroll was characterised by warmth and enthusiasm. This was evident  in the preaching of the Gospel, in a great heart for evangelism, in the concern for revival, in worldwide mission interest and in the translation and distribution of Reformed writings. He was a gifted conference speaker and organised conferences all over the world. He will be particularly remembered as the inspiration behind, and the organiser of, conferences for black ministers in South Africa and elsewhere. It was during one such Conference that he took the severe stroke that handicapped him, but for three and a half years he continued his fervent interest in and prayer for mission work worldwide even from his sickbed, and was an encouragement to many who visited him.

We remember his family Sharon, Michelle, Neil and Joanne, who cared for him so lovingly. His wife Lyn predeceased him in 2013.

This year is the 60th anniversary of the formation of the Trust. We honour a colleague who was a blessing to all who knew him and played a vital role in that Reformed recovery, which has reverberated round the world.

‘Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them’ (Revelation 14.13).

* * *

The Funeral and Service of Thanksgiving will be held at Cuckfield Baptist Church, Haywards Heath, RH17 5GP at 2pm on Monday 21 August (DV).

It is with great regret that we must announce the passing of John Cheeseman (1950-2017) who was called home to his Saviour earlier this year.

John, an admirer of the Puritans and a Banner author (Saving Grace and The Priority of Preaching), went to be with the Lord on 15 April 2017.

Whilst studying Classics at Oxford University he received a call to be a preacher. After studying under Jim Packer and Alec Motyer in Bristol, where he met his wife, Joy, he served in Sevenoaks, Egham, Leyton, Westgate and Eastbourne. For the last seven years he engaged in an itinerant ministry.

Preaching was his passion. Committed to Christ and his Word, John emphasized and exemplified the priority of biblical faithfulness and experimental faith, a rare combination amongst English Anglicans. He prized the ministry of the Shepherd’s Conference in the USA and the Leicester Minister’s Conference in the UK.

He was diagnosed with an uncommon systemic disease in early 2017 and told that his life expectancy was just months. To the end he encouraged his family (Joy and their children, Peter, David and Cherry) and friends to rest on Christ. He also thanked those with whom he had enjoyed the privilege (his words) of sharing in ministry.

His confidence in Christ, his promises, and his grace was evident to the end. He entered glory the day before Easter, looking forward expectantly to resurrection on the last day, and rejoicing that he would depart to be with Christ.

It is with deep regret that we must announce that after a long battle with Alzheimer’s the wife of Stuart Olyott, Doris, passed away during the Banner Ministers’ Conference. Much prayer had been made for her at that time and for Mr Olyott the day before she died. There was much thanksgiving for her life when we heard that she had been called home.

A video of her funeral service is available here as well as in the link below. The service is incredibly moving and full of the gospel of salvation in Christ.

When his method of teaching is recalled, of sending his students to the standard texts on theology (including Hodge), and then adding his own observations on each doctrine in the class from which his “Theology” was derived, it is to be expected that his work would have a certain freshness to it, and this is just what is found. In these days of the soundbite and the autocue, public speaking is a declining art-form, though it is not extinct and still has its own weight and force.

In New Testament times, unlike today, rhetoric was a highly regarded skill and works were written about it which are still read. Dabney quotes liberally from these, but does not always agree with them. He knew that gospel preaching was not to be ‘with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect’.

‘Evangelical eloquence’, for Dabney, was unique. It consisted in ‘the soul’s virtuous energy exerted through speech’ which applied ‘the authority of God to the conscience’ and formed ‘the image of Christ upon the souls of men’.

Robert Dabney (1820-98), who was for forty years Professor in Union Seminary, Virginia, U.S.A., was in the opinion of Dr. Archibald Alexander, ‘the best teacher of theology in the United States, if not in the world’.

The third volume includes Dabney’s treatment of issues in society which are of perennial concern to the Church of Christ, including Anti-Christian Science, Secularized Education, Strikes and the influence of Roman Catholicism. A number of biographical sketches of great Christians whom Dabney knew also appear, including one of General T. J. (‘Stonewall’) Jackson, to whom Dabney had been Adjutant-General during the Civil War.

Palmer reminds his readers that what we do for Christ always relies and results from who we are in Christ. For instance, the tenderness of Palmer’s care for the soul who crossed his path is just as inspiring as the wisdom with which he ministered grace to their spirits. In Palmer we see wisdom combined with a loving fervor for Christ’s people. Yet above such considerations as these, the reason why i have found myself increasingly drawn to Palmer in recent years is the way in which his high view of Holy Scripture both shaped and empowered his remarkable ministry. Benjamin Morgan Palmer’s life and writings demonstrate that strong convictions regarding the inspiration, authority, and sufficiency of Holy Scripture will equip gospel servants with all things necessary to answer the requirements of their times.

Benjamin Morgan Palmer (1818-1902) ‘one of the few greatest preachers of the first nineteen centuries of the Christian era’, was just 25 when he became the successor of J. H. Thornwell in Columbia, South Carolina, and 38 at the commencement of his 46-year pastorate of the First Presbyterian Church in the great business centre of New Orleans.

This biography takes us behind the public figure to the humble, prayerful Christian whose life was marked by affliction. His only son was lost in childhood and four daughters were to die, one after another, followed by his wife. As Palmer saw it, ‘The earthly lights are put out that no earthly love may come in between Him and us.’

This is not only a great biography; it is an outstandingly relevant record in an age when the church needs a recovery of spiritual strength and vision. It would be hard to read it sympathetically without being led to pray.

‘I am profoundly thankful that the Banner of Truth has republished this volume, which has become extremely rare and is now unknown to many. I cannot imagine a more accessible or useful introductory work for those wishing to become more familiar with the rich theological heritage of Southern Presbyterianism. The subject matter speaks to a much wider audience than the descendants (literal and spiritual) of the men described. Indeed the reissue of White’s work ought to be welcomed by all friends of robust, warm, evangelical, Reformed Christianity, for the stalwarts about whom he writes offer much timeless biblical wisdom to contemporary Christians ministering in the context of a crumbling western civilization.’ — LIGON DUNCAN

A few blocks from the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, South Carolina, is a fine antebellum mansion, the Robert Mills Historic House, named for the man who designed it. The house, beautifully restored, with Regency furnishings, marble mantelpieces, and sterling silver doorknobs and locksets, reflects the wealth and culture of Ainsley Halt, the man who briefly owned it. More fitting, however, would be desks and tables and books of the professors and students of Columbia Theological Seminary, which made the house its home for almost a hundred years. The rooms of the main floor were the classrooms, where George Howe trained generations of Southern ministers in biblical exegesis, where James Henley Thornwell taught Calvin’s Institutes, where John Adger explained the sacraments and church polity, and where John Girardeau set forth the great themes of Reformed theology. It was in one of these rooms that two students organized the Society of Inquiry on Missions in February of 1831.

On the top floor was the library-many of its books lovingly collected in Europe by Thomas Smyth, pastor of Charleston’s Second Presbyterian Church. Woodrow Wilson said that in the little chapel, originally the mansion’s stables, he had heard some of the greatest examples of eloquent and powerful preaching. In that chapel the Southern Presbyterian Book of Church Order was hammered out. A later Columbian beautifully wrote that ‘the Book of Church Order for a church which glories to acclaim [Christ] alone as King who was cradled in a manger, was composed in a house built for a carriage stable’ (William Childs Robinson, Columbia Theological Seminary, p. 94).

As a teacher, Peck was in the front rank. ‘As an expositor of truth, as an exegete of Scripture,’ his successor C.R. Vaughan believed, ‘he was probably without a rival in his day.’ But it was not mere teachers that he laboured to prepare for the gospel ministry but rather men ‘with a tongue set on fire’. In this his own life was a constant example, possessed as he was with a moral conviction and a resolute fidelity to Scripture which ‘sometimes puzzled the lovers of expediency’. Yet this was ever combined with a generous enthusiasm and warm affections. Devotion to principle is the only biblical remedy for our age of religious uncertainty and compromise. In these volumes, Peck’s life work will be continued in another generation.

In the wide range of contemporary moral debate the abortion question occupies a central place. To the majority of people today the termination of an unwanted pregnancy is regarded as a woman’s unquestionable right. But can this right ever take precedence over the unborn’s right to life? In this booklet Peter Barnes argues for the biblical teaching that the unborn baby is in God’s image and so protected by the sixth commandment. He exhorts us to open our mouth for the dumb (Prov. 31:8).

What is real Christianity? Jeffrey Wilson believed that ‘a hybrid Christianity which is essentially man-centred, materialistic and worldly, and shamefully dishonouring to the Lord Jesus Christ’ is almost endemic in the Western world, and particularly in the U.S.A.

The Authentic Gospel traces the root cause of this situation to a fatal assumption that it is possible to become a Christian by having Christ as Saviour irrespective of whether he is received and served as Lord. By a careful examination of what the Bible means by such ideas as faith, conversion and commitment, it shows how mistaken such teaching is and how seriously it misleads those who follow it. In a direct, plain-speaking style, Jeffrey Wilson arrests, instructs and redirects us to the authentic gospel which Christ and the apostles preached and taught.

Based on the words of Psalm 119:57-60 A Life of Principled Obedience expounds the essential elements of faithful Christian living. Bringing a life-time of pastoral experience to bear on this important subject, Albert N. Martin explains the foundation on which an obedient Christian life is built, the context in which it develops and the blessing to which it leads. Profoundly challenging, this biblical teaching also points to the true freedom and joy of authentic Christian living.

‘You are what you read’ suggests Sinclair B. Ferguson in this booklet about reading and using Christian books. The spiritual health of individuals or Christian fellowships is often related to their reading habits. Read Any Good Books? discusses the kind of books we should read and gives practical advice about the use of Christian literature. At a time when an abundance of good literature is available in the English-speaking world, Read Any Good Books? encourages Christians to use their privileges to the full.

The MLJ Trust has announced that all 1,600 recorded sermons by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones are available to download, at no cost, to anyone who wants to listen to them. There are no exceptions, so the Ephesians sermons, Romans sermons, etc., will all be available. All one has to do is join the MLJ Library (membership is free) and start to download! Simply go to the newly updated site at www.mljtrust.org and click on MLJ Library.

The MLJ Recordings Trust, in existence for 30 years in God’s grace, will become completely dependent on the voluntary donations of brothers and sisters who feel called to support the ministry while downloading sermons. But, after much prayer and discussion, it was felt that as the world of low-cost distribution through the internet was now far-reaching enough that most people around the world (even in developing countries) can gain access to this ministry through a computer, and as many other ministries have had a positive experience shifting to a voluntary donation approach to on-line sermons, this change might be in accordance with God’s will.

Conflict and Triumph was first published in 1874. With a pastor’s heart, the author, William Henry Green, opens up the meaning of the Book of Job. He explains the structure of the book, the role played by each of the participants, the significance of their speeches and the bearing of each part on the overall theme. His deep pastoral concern is to help the ‘afflicted child of God’ to draw ‘the waters of consolation from this inspired and copious source’.

Watch pastor Decherd Stevens below share how Conflict and Triumph gave him a greater understanding of the Book of Job, and prepared him for his battle with cancer.
