‘William S. Plumer’s Commentary on the Psalms is my constant companion as I read and preach through the Psalms. His “Devotional Thoughts” at the end of his exposition of each of the psalms are so rich, wise, pastoral, specific and suggestive, that every preacher will find superabundant help, especially in the area of application, in them. I cannot recommend Plumer too highly.’– LIGON DUNCAN

Book Description

Although more than six hundred commentators have written on the Psalms, it has long been difficult to find a comprehensive treatment of this book of Scripture in one volume. Some expositions have excelled in scholarship, but, unlike the Psalter, in instructing the mind they have failed to exercise the heart. Dr Plumer’s Commentary avoids this defect, the author believing that from the Psalms ‘piety has derived more nourishment than from any other source,’ and that his work should serve that same purpose. In 1211 pages he gives both exposition and doctrinal and practical remarks and presents in readable form a great wealth of material drawn from all the leading commentators who had gone before him. In the opinion of Dr John Macleod of Edinburgh, he succeeded in producing the best single volume on this book of Scripture.

Graduating from Princeton Seminary in 1826, Plumer was a well-known Southern Presbyterian preacher and writer who spent the last thirteen years of his life as a Professor at Columbia Theological Seminary, South Carolina. He produced his exposition of the Psalms during the prime of life, and, as he tells us, ‘never felt more disposed to any work.’ In the opinion of others, Dr Plumer was outstanding as a spiritual Christian: ‘His prayers,’ wrote Moses D. Hoge, ‘were the tender pleadings of a soul in communion with God.’ Of the place which the Psalms had in his own experience he writes: ‘During a Christian and ministerial life, neither short, uneventful, nor free from dark days and sharp sorrows, the author has never been able to secure to himself, or administer to others, full support and abounding consolation without a resort to the Psalms.’

Book Description

‘I confess that at the outset I was put off by the fear of being thought rash and arrogant if I should attempt such an undertaking after so many excellent works.’

So wrote John Calvin (1509-1564) in the dedicatory letter of his commentary on Romans, his first printed exposition. The initial hesitation overcome, Calvin went on to produce a commentary series covering much of Scripture, one which is, in words of William Cunningham, ‘not only superior to any that preceded it, but it has continued ever since, and continues to this day, to be regarded by all competent judges, as a work of highest value.’ C.H. Spurgeon concurred: ‘Everything that Calvin wrote by way of exposition is priceless. His expositions are more equal in excellence than those of other men; other men rise and fall, but he is almost uniformly good.’

These estimations still hold true and, even in this age of multiplying commentaries, those of John Calvin stand out as models of honesty, good sense, and evangelical warmth.

Here, in this extensive exposition of Jeremiah, we encounter Calvin’s great gifts as an exegete and theologian. But we also see how his experience as a pastor and preacher equipped him to produce this outstanding exposition of ‘the weeping prophet.’

The author’s aim was to explain the text accurately, to clarify the geographical and historical references in Judges and to draw forth from the narrative and the inspired Word the spiritual lessons designed by the Divine Author. He believed that ‘the histories in Holy Scripture are wonderfully framed by their Divine Author to set forth spiritual and everlasting truths for all ages, and especially to typify Him in whom all history, type, and prophecy find their centre – Jesus Christ, the same yesterday and today, and for ever‘ (Heb. 13:8)

‘Very precious, Mr. Andrew Bonar has a keen eye for a typical analogy, but he always keeps the rein upon his imagination, and is therefore safe to follow. He is a master in Israel.’ — C. H. SPURGEON

Book Description

Leviticus is one of the least read and understood parts of Scripture. Yet, the author of this commentary points out, no book in the Bible contains more of the very words of God than Leviticus.

Bonar wrote his notes on Leviticus for his personal use, but was persuaded to publish them by friends. His commentary, though based on sound exegesis, is marked by simplicity. The author is always careful to make spiritual application, for, as he says, ‘The Gospel of the grace of God, with all that follows in its train, may be found in Leviticus. This is the glorious attraction of the book to every reader who feels himself a sinner.’

‘The best work on the Proverbs. The Scriptural method of exposition so well carried out by Bridges renders all his writings very suggestive to ministers. While explaining the passage in hand, he sets other portions of the word in new lights.’ — C. H. SPURGEON

Book Description

The Book of Proverbs, in Bridges’ view, ‘is not generally estimated at its just value’. The author of The Christian Ministry does not favour a purely technical study of the text, but gives a homiletical and practical treatment. ‘The best work on the Proverbs’, was C.H. Spurgeon’s verdict on this commentary. ‘Whilst explaining the passage in hand, he sets other portions of the word in new lights’.

Charles Bridges (1794-1869) was one of the leaders of Evangelical party in the Church of England in the last century. He was the vicar of Old Newton, Suffolk, from 1823 to 1849, and later of Weymouth and Hinton Martell in Dorset. Although The Christian Ministry is Bridges’ bestknown literary work, his expositions which included Ecclesiastes and Psalm 119 as well as Proverbs, are highly valued.

An incomplete commentary by an ‘unknown’ author on a book which has already had so many expositors may seem a surprising addition to the Geneva Series. As publishers our prejudice against an incomplete commentary was overcome by the sheer worth of these pages.

Hodge writes ‘To a greater degree than any commentary within the writer’s knowledge, this volume is adapted to spiritual edification. The leading characteristic of these lectures is their spirituality…No believer can read it without finding himself a better Christian, nor can he fail to be made wiser.’

It was at once recognized as belonging to the number of the few truly great works on this Epistle and that verdict has been upheld by Christian leaders down to the present day.

Robert Haldane’s Exposition of Romans, both in its contents and in the power of its influence, stands among the foremost of the many treatments of the epistle. As a commentary, Thomas Chalmers ‘strongly recommended’ it; Spurgeon put it in the front rank, and more recently, Martyn Lloyd-Jones owed ‘much profit and pleasure’ to it, characterising its contents as unsurpassed in ‘warmth of spirit’ and ‘practical application’.

‘Most valuable. With no writer do we more fully agree.’ — C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

When Paul came to Ephesus in AD 54 it claimed to be the first city of Asia. Yet today the city is gone; and on the site of the Temple of Diana, which was the rallying-point of heathenism, is a stagnant pond. Ephesus is now known principally for its connection with the Christian Church- for Paul’s visit and his subsequent letter.

The epistle to the Ephesians is in many respects the profoundest of Paul’s writings. The grandeur of pagan learning and devotion pales by comparison with the Apostle’s mighty exposition of the truth as it is in Jesus. The great theme of Ephesians is the one church, the new spiritual temple God is erecting of Jew and Gentile. Because of its profundity and scope, it is one of the most demanding of books upon which adequately to comment.

Charles Hodge, whose commentaries on 1 and 2 Corinthians were among the earlier volumes in the Geneva Series, is qualified on several grounds to write on Ephesians. Though a competent linguist, his main interest was not in the field of textual criticism. Hodge, first and foremost, was a theologian, and without a mastery of systematic theology one cannot do justice to the early chapters of Ephesians. Reference may also be made to his noted piety and graciousness, his catholic spirit and his wide vision.

The great virtue of Hodge on Ephesians is his ability constantly to communicate the sense and overall argument of a passage. A peerless teacher, his aim, with the pen as in the classroom, was ‘the simple exhibition of the truth which God had revealed’- his own description of Paul’s preaching.

Book Description

The Pastoral Epistles, first published in 1874, is the last commentary written by Patrick Fairbairn, but his first on any of the books of the New Testament.

It grew out of Fairbairn’s lectures on pastoral theology to students at the Free Church College, Glasgow, where he served both as Principal and as Professor of Divinity. His purposes in publishing his material were twofold; to benefit students of the Bible, especially ministers and ministerial students, in their grasp and application of the text, and to defend the divine inspiration and apostolic authority of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus against attacks made by contemporary scholarship. In both aims he succeeds admirably.

Book Description

Candlish’s exposition of 1 John was the ripe fruit of years of careful and loving study of the great themes in Johannine teaching. His aim was not so much to produce a detailed technical commentary after the fashion of much exegesis in the new German tradition, but to set on display the heights and depths of the theology of John’s letter: ‘it can be studied aright exegetically, only when it is studied theologically.’ His driving purpose, like that of the apostle, is to see truth and joyful assurance born and brought to maturity in the hearts of his readers. The multi-faceted privileges of fellowship with the Father and the Son through the Spirit are constantly brought to the fore.

‘The more we use Hodge, the more we value him. This applies to all his commentaries.’ — C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

Hodge’s work on 1 and 2 Corinthians forms one of the most significant parts of the plan for a series of ‘popular commentaries’ on the New Testament which he projected with J. A. Alexander in the 1850s. When the early death of Alexander prevented the completion of the series, the individual volumes were quickly prized in their own right and went through many editions on both sides of the Atlantic.

The qualities which have given Hodge’s commentaries such a wide and enduring market are readily to be seen. In the first place they are singularly clear. The technicalities of critical opinion, which soon cause a volume to become dated, are not to be found in his pages. His aim was to produce commentaries which learned and unlearned alike could consult with profit. Believing that he was dealing with the words of the Holy Spirit he endeavoured to set out both what those words contain and the effects which their truth should have upon the conscience and life.

Book Description

The author was the third son of the famous Archibald Alexander, and an eminent Christian teacher in his own right. The Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia described him as the most remarkable linguist ever produced by America. Like his father, Alexander taught at Princeton Theological Seminary, occupying successively the chairs of Oriental and Biblical Literature, Church History, and New Testament Literature. His premature death was called by A.A. Hodge, ‘the most disastrous blow the institutions of Princeton ever experienced’.

Of this Commentary on Acts C. H. Spurgeon wrote, ‘In all respects a work of the highest merit’. J.H. Thornwell held the same opinion: ‘Alexander’s commentaries on Acts and Mark I regarded as models, as nearly perfection in their kind as human skill could make them, and I have been in the habit, not only of recommending them, but of insisting on my classes procuring and studying them’.

Alexander’s merit as a writer lies in his clarity and precision of thought. His great purpose is to state the meaning of the text of Scripture and the continuing demand for his commentaries is one proof of the extent to which he succeeded.

C. H. Spurgeon, in his famous work, Commenting and Commentaries, placed Davenant on Colossians in the first rank of commentaries on this Pauline epistle and approvingly quoted the words of Charles Bridges about this volume: ‘I know no exposition upon a detached portion of Scripture (with the single exception of Owen on the Hebrews) that will compare with it in all parts…in depth, accuracy, and discursiveness.’

On the title page of an old Latin edition a satisfied reader made a note of his deep appreciation for Davenant’s masterpiece: ‘Don’t abuse this good old book: for it is an extraordinary piece, and the best Exposition on St. Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians that ever was published…and I am afraid there will never be a better so long as the world endures.’

The Methodist preacher James Hervey expressed his appreciation of this commentary in more measured terms. ‘For perspicuity of style and accuracy of method; for judgment in discerning and fidelity in representing the Apostle’s meaning; for strength of argument in refuting errors, and felicity of invention in deducing practical doctrines, tending both to the establishment of faith, and the cultivation of holiness, it is inferior to no writing of the kind; and richly deserves to be read, to be studied, to be imitated, by our young divines.’

On the strength of such high recommendations as these, the Trust is making available this ‘much praised’ commentary with the prayer that it will continue to instruct, encourage, and sanctify the faith and life of Christian people in the 21st century.

Book Description

In his Introduction Dr. Wilbur Smith writes: ‘In a day like this in which we are living, when the governments of the world are breaking up, in a day when a vast part of the earth is controlled by a merciless dictatorship, when multitudes of Christians have already known persecution, and many more will before this age ends, there is hardly any book in the Old Testament we could read with more profit than the book of Daniel and scarcely a commentary on any portion of the Old Testament quite so profitable as Calvin’s two volumes on Daniel.

I suppose nothing on the prayer of Daniel, occupying most of the ninth chapter of his prophecy, has ever been written so rich and deep and comprehensive as the 17,000 words which Calvin devotes to the sixteen verses of this marvellous outpouring of the heart of the ancient prophet.’

This volume has been reprinted from the Calvin Translation Society two volume edition of 1852-53, edited by Thomas Myers.

‘The Scriptural method of exposition so well carried out by Bridges renders all his writings very suggestive to ministers. While explaining the passage in hand, he sets other portions of the word in new lights.’– C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

Charles Bridges’ commentary on Ecclesiastes shows that this neglected book of Scripture is:

  • Relevant for today. Our land needs to be awakened to the futility of seeking happiness without God.
  • Clear when interpreted in the light of its overall theme.
  • Suitable not merely for ‘the light-hearted and thoughtless’ but for ‘the most eminent saint of God’.
  • Necessary. ‘On no account could we have spared this book from the canon. It has its own sphere of instruction and that of no common value’.
  • Harmonious with the New Testament. ‘We cannot fully enforce and apply Ecclesiastes except by the aid of Gospel light’.
  • Sanctifying. The message of the book is designed to bring men to complete consecration to God, as Bridges declares: ‘The men that we want are lively, warm, real men- men who have a daily contact with a personal living Saviour- men whose religion is the element in which they breathe, the principle by which they work- men who think of life as the seed time for eternity’.

‘A judicious and gracious Scotch commentary, after the style of Dickson and Hutcheson.’– C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

Perhaps of all the apostles, most Christians find themselves most readily drawn to Simon Peter. His failure, restoration and subsequent usefulness provide hope for those who face testing and temptation. Despite that, Peter’s twin epistles are probably given less attention than many other sections of the New Testament. But they continue to speak with power and relevance.

They provide encouragement and assurance from one who himself needed both; they give basic instruction in Christian living; they also provide clear teaching on false doctrine. They are therefore essential letters for Christians today.

Nisbet’s outstanding practical treatment is an ideal aid for preachers, teachers, group leaders and all students or readers of the Bible.

‘We always get something out of Greenhill whenever we refer to him. He had not, of course, the critical skill of the present day, but his spiritual insight was keen. He rather commented on a passage than expounded it.’ — C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

Greenhill on Ezekiel, first published in five quarto volumes, constitutes one of the foremost of Puritan works in Old Testament exposition. Delivered to crowded congregations in the city of London, the content is popular and in the best seventeenth century tradition of experimental preaching which spoke to heart and conscience as well as the mind. It would be too much to say that Greenhill provides everything necessary for an understanding of this prophet but what he does give surely justified two nineteenth century editions. It is the best of these editions which is here reprinted.

Book Description

The expositions of John Brown (1784-1858) are unusually helpful to all kinds of readers. Spurgeon said in his Commenting and Commentaries, ‘Brown is a modern Puritan of the utmost value.’ The volume on Galatians is one of the scarcest books in the market.’ As a theological professor, Brown was strongly convinced that his students’ view should be ‘not only consistent with, but derived from a careful exegesis of the ‘words which the Holy Ghost teacheth’…it has been my sincere desire to bring out of the inspired words what is really in them, and to put nothing into them that is not really there.’  But as the pastor of a congregation, Brown was also anxious that his expositions should edify all Christians and not only instruct students. As a result his commentaries are unusually helpful to all kinds of readers.

Book Description

Because Calvin was a sound exegete, little of what he wrote is dated. Although his treatment of the early chapters is thorough, it is not disproportionate, and the later narratives concerning Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph are not passed over hastily. Indeed, Calvin excels in bringing out the principles of God’s dealings with men, as individuals and in covenant, and in showing faithfully yet tenderly the human weakness and sin all too evident in Genesis.

Book Description

This book, as suggested by C. H. Spurgeon, is ‘A capital book’, providing exegesis of the text. In addition, at the end of each section, Moore lists a series of practical inferences. These, rather than ‘spoon-feed’ the reader, indicate how Scripture should be developed in practical application.
‘My object’, writes Moore, ‘has been to furnish such an exposition of the meaning of the text as would be intelligible to any thinking layman who wished to understand the Scriptures thoroughly, and also to aid my brethren in the ministry.’

‘A great expositor, always deep, full and overflowing…Dr. David Smith says of this work: “There is not a single instance of carelessness in investigating the true meaning of a text, or of timidity in stating the conclusion at which the author had arrived.” What more could be said in praise of any exposition?’– C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

Commentaries generally belong to one of two categories. Either they aim at a devotional thoroughness which lays no great emphasis on the exact meaning of individual words, or they concentrate on such a detailed examination of the text that the spirit and power of the book is largely lost. Among the few commentators who stand between these two positions is Dr. John Brown of Edinburgh (1784-1858).

By seeking to develop a style of exposition that was both edifying to his congregation and valuable to his divinity students, he produced commentaries which, in the words of Dr. William Cunningham, ‘formed a marked era in the history of Scriptural Interpretation’. Not behind the foremost contemporary scholars in his emphasis on correct exegesis, he nevertheless sought not only that the minds of his readers might be brought ‘into immediate contact with the mind of the Spirit’ but that their whole being might be resigned to ‘the empire of the Word of God’.

Book Description

The republication of this exposition of James by Thomas Manton is timely and that for three good reasons.

  1. The first is the special relevance of this Epistle in the contemporary Church situation, with the constant danger of antinomianism.
  2. The second reason is that for a thorough exposition of ‘this very practical book’ Manton’s work still stands in a category of its own.
  3. The third reason is the excellent example of expository preaching which this book provides.
